What 36 hours of travel does to you...
Yeah, I don't look fresh, but this is how happy I was to have arrived in Ghana! So, its 13 days since I arrived. And of course, I was bound to get ill at some stage! But let me just tell you, this was the a case of Bali Belly times 10 or so in one night. I'm sure you don't want to know details, but I will tell you anyway, because it was kind of funny!
So, Jordan calls me at about 7pm and I wasn't really in the mood to talk because my stomach was just feeling horrible. So i quickly get off the phone and try to sleep by my guts were just calling out to the world of it's pain. I tried to ignore it a bit more and drifted in and out of sleep when at about 11:30pm, I encountered the most intense pain in my chest. The intense pain was a large amount of spew working its way up. So, get up, but first, i get caught in the bloody mosquito net, then can't find the plug for the light then i lock myself in my room so I can't get out! After all the fumbling, I did a massive projectile spew over my patio and onto the sand. It was
Amaka
This is Amaka. She is the Grand neice of my host mother. Her mother did not want to look after her so her grandmother looks after her. Her grandmother is like the canteen lady at the school. a very significant amount, and another 9 more times of the same amount. I woke up the whole house and they were very worried. I thought, bugger, it's probably time for a toilet stop. It was a pretty bad case of the squirty bums which lasted about 4 mins non-stop. Then again in the middle of the night, 3 times! So, after a lot of charcoal medicine, I woke up with a horrible fever. Well, considering I had lost all of my bodily liquids and food in one night. I also lost a lot of weight. None of my pants fit me.
Anyway, the western medicine wasn't working so well, so I had this Ghanaian herbal treatment which sweats out all the toxins. And believe it or not, it worked really well. It's like a bucket of scolding hot water with various dried leaves, lime and some other things. You sit with your legs around the bucket with two blankets over you and the bucket. You sit for 5-10 mins, stirring the bucket until you are drenched in sweat. Then you have a shower with the bucket water. i had this twice and felt much better. So no more
Amaka and Me
Yes, my hair is really bad at the moment... That's what heat and 2 in 1 shampoo does to you. And also bucket showers so that you can't get the shampoo out! squirty bums for me. But, the smell of the food is still a little off putting right now.
Oh. And I have THE BIGGEST CRAVING for Taste of India Risotto from Pik-A-Pasta. arghhhhhhhh. And also Chicken Curry Don from Magic Monkey. Oh, woe is me.
Ah what else.... hrm... not a whole lot. I haven't had a chance to see much while i'm alone. And the other volunteer doesn't get here till Friday now. My co-ordinator has this thing about making it all convenient for him, not the volunteer. He actually really annoys me. He also annoys my host mother so I don't feel so bad!
One of the teachers, Promise, has offered to take me to Wli Waterfalls. I said that we should wait for the other volunteers so he is happy to take us maybe this sunday. Which will be super exciting!
The days at school are very tiring. The children are very naughty. But I can understand why. Most of these children are orphans living with foster families, where the families are rarely at home because they are out working, or they are from single parent homes where again, the children can be
left on their own for days before the parent comes back. The children I teach usually have an older sibling that looks after them (older as in 11 or 12 years old) so it is very hard for them to learn what is right and wrong.
There is one little girl in particular, Sweety, who has latched onto me. I am her 'mother'. She is 2 1/2 and follows me everywhere. If I read off the board, then she will follow, but if Bless, the teacher reads, she will not follow. She is very cute and I will be very sad to say buy to her.
Ah... enough writing. Now I have to figure out this photo business....
