Come to my store!
No, thanks!
Why not?! "Why not?" It's a phrase that's swept the nation of Egypt, well, at least the little town of Dahab. Everywhere you go, conversations go as follows:
"Come look in my shop."
"No, thanks."
"Why not?!"
"You want to eat something in my restaurant?"
"No, not right now, thanks."
"Why not?!"
It is also used in a different way to mean to equivalent of the polite British phrase, "Oh, go on then." Scott and I find ourselves using it all the time, for example:
Scott: "Shall we go grab a coffee?"
Sharon: "Why not?"
Sharon: "Shall we take along our snorkels today?"
Scott: "Why not?!"
The locals know the importance of the phrase as evidenced by the shop names (see photos). It is really quite contagious! More on Dahab itself to follow... Thanks for all the comments. Not sure how to reply to them via travel blog, however, to will have to email you all from hotmail in time.
