This is my most recent trip to Egypt, October of 2006. You can buy your Visa at the airport for like $35 usd, There are many options for lodging in Cairo all of which are VERY reasonable ($2 - $10 +++) a night. It was during Ramadan the holy holiday for this part of the world. I arrived here from Amsterdam via Switzerland and planned on staying only 14 days but spent almost 21 days instead. Enjoying a couple of nights at the end of my stay in Cairo at the Four Seasons, if you can afford this place it is a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday Cairo.
