It is designed to make its own people comfortable. - Clifton Fadiman We met our travel companions last evening for our short meeting, then we walked to downtown Cairo for dinner together. We have 12 in our group, 6 Australians, 3 New Zealanders, and us 3 Canadians. We walked over the bridge, through Tahrir ... Read Full Entry

Statues of scribes looked straight ahead, or to the left, as this one is doing, never to the right.

This miniature (that's why its so blurry) is the only depiction of Khufu that exists.

Husband and wife

The wife always has her arm around her husband (in this case he is a dwarf) and a slight smile on her face to indicate her happiness in her marriage. Their two children are below them. Children were usually naked, sometimes with a finger in their mouth, and with a hair lock. The darker one is the boy and the white one the girl.

The statues were designed as a backup place where the body could live if the mummification process did not work properly. This block shaped body had the essentials to continue in the afterlife.

All the photos so far are from the Old and Middle Kingdom eras. The Old Kingdom was approx 2575-2125 BCE and the Middle Period was approx 2055 to 1650 BCE.

Now we are in the New Kingdom (approx 1550-1153 BCE). He was the rebel king who made a major change to the Ancient Egyptian religion (from worshipping many gods to worshipping only one - Ra the sun disk). He also moved the capital. These both were changed back after he died.

See the gap in the middle where his cartouche (with his name) was removed. If the king's name was destroyed, he could not continue in the afterlife.
