Hello everyone Well, after 3 months and 20 days of fairly reasonable health, I finally came to that glorious day that every expat looks forward to: their first bout of malaria. Now I don't want all the folks back home to worry too much. The fact that I can sit up well enough to write this proves that I already have a much lighter case than most. Best of all, I seem to have the lightest case anyone can remember; just some fatigue, a bit of a headache, and some fever when I'm sleeping. Normally, malaria is one of those kick-your-ass-one-foot-in-the-grave illnesses, but for some reason I've got a really mild dose. And I'm not complaining! We did a blood test to confirm, and sure enough I've got it, with an average concentration of the parasite ... read more

Heya everyone Well, that song last time must have done it cuz the SCOTTISH LADIES WERE TRIUMPHANT!!!! :) In a score of (what sources tell me) 22-17, they defeated the very sneaky Ottawa Irish to become Russell League Champs. I look forward to the match report! Well done ladies!!!!!! In other news (although not nearly as exciting) things in Ouagadougou are going fine. Been training hard for my climb up Kilimanjaro in 2 weeks!!!! Actually, 3 weeks exactly from today I will be standing at the summit of the highest walkable mountain in the world, and the hightest mountain in Africa. The training has been tough, and I've been barely able to move for a few days do to an over-zealous workout on Monday. I decided it would be a good idea to workout the climbing ... read more

O Flower of Scotland, When will we see Your like again, That fought and died for, Your wee bit Hill and Glen, And stood against him, Proud Edward's Army, And sent him homeward, Tae think again. The Hills are bare now, And Autumn leaves lie thick and still, O'er land that is lost now, Which those so dearly held, That stood against him, Proud Edward's Army, And sent him homeward, Tae think again. Those days are past now, And in the past they must remain, But we can still rise now, And be the nation again, That stood against him, Proud Edward's Army, And sent him homeward, Tae think again. 0 Flower of Scotland, When will we see your like again, That fought and died for, Your wee bit Hill and Glen, And stood against him, ... read more

Nous sommes ici en Burkina Faso avec les plus bizarre keyboards et mon pathetic francais. Thanks Almitra for the french spelling help - where are your silky french skills when I need them? We finally actually received one of the texts you sent Suze and Gia. Sounds like a lovely night. As for us, we're in a large, fumey, sweaty, rainy city. We got our first healthy dose of french practice in the taxi from Bolgatango, when we shared with an older Parisian couple. I decided to warm up with them; They were very courteous, I must say, speaking clearly and slowly, as well as accepting my ugly butchery of their elegant language. Our driver was a lovely chap with the deepest voice you can imagine, a thumb missing from his left hand, and the most ... read more

We have continued south west and after some fruitless searching for elepants near a small town called Boromo we have arrived in Burkinas second city, Bobo. The biggest change is how the land looks. In what seems a ridiculously small distance the savannah which appeared around Ouaga has been replaced with lush forests and vegetation so thich you can barely see a few metres off the side of the road. The rainy season has really kicked in now too which is great for us as it means long respites from the heat and the chance to sleep without sweating. Another huge benefit for us is the return of relatively plentiful and varied food. Bananas are back and so are women carrying huge baskets of vegetables instead of the sad looking, half rotten tomatos we had become ... read more

Well we succesfully made the crossing south and are now settling into a new city and a new country. Contrary to out expectations Burkina seems to be somewhat richer than Mali. Can't really find out if this is true or not but the paved roads, reliable electricity and the fact that Ouaga (Burkinabe capital) makes Bamako (Malian capital) look like an oversized shanty town. We've enjoyed our time here so far, we spent about a week in the most northen city where we met 30 Peace Corps volunteers. It was great to speak some English and even better to spash out on a burger and chips after having eaten nothing but rice and sauce for 3 weeks. In Ouaga we have been hassled by a thousand phonecard sellers, listened to the constant building work going on ... read more

Heya everyone Sorry there's been a lull in the writing. I've had no end of trouble getting these pics loaded, but here they are, finally! So last week I got a panicked phone call from one of our geos saying that there were issues with one of the villages that needed to be rectified immediately. So this meant an emergency trip into town, then out to the village for negotiations, then back to the bush. This made for LOTS of road travel which I find quite exhausting, but it was worth it. The negotiations went well and the village leaders decided to present me with a gift for my trouble; a rooster! Yup, no joke. It's one of those situations too where it's SO rude to refuse, so you're pretty much stuck with the bird. While ... read more

Heya everyone **This is an older entry I had avoided posting cuz of picture problems but enjoy the text and I'll work the pics out later** Things here in Burkina are good. I'm up at site right now, living in a tin can in the desert. It actually sounds much worse than it is, but compared to other camps this place is quite hospitable. A little story about the tin can housing... We live in "villas" (I find the name ironic to the point of being cheeky) that are basically big metal containers. These are actually former storage containers used to ship things overseas, but it was so expensive to ship them back empty that they stayed. I'm pretty sure they're from about 1980 or earlier... Anyway, these big metal boxes have been transformed into cute ... read more

Heya everybody, So I am in mourning like the rest of Canada today. Our Oilers couldn't pull it off in game 7. :( It's an unfortunate result, and my condolences go out to Krissy in particular who must live in Edmonton with what is surely a very sour group of citizens. Do you think Hallmark makes a "sorry your team choked" card? Well that's the bad news. Now on to the good news! Stuff in the field went well. All good things to report on that front. I got to check out a dry-season garden that we've been talking about here for some time, so I took tons of pics and the engineer there and I discussed some possible improvements. Also, I got to hang out with some Australians I met there, and took some evening ... read more
