Alongside the Maasai Mara and Serengeti/Ngorongoro, the Okavango Delta is undoubtedly one of the most famous natural wonders of Africa. It is our next destination as we cross the border into Botswana. At this time of year, the delta is flooded, and this year’s floods are particularly high. We camp in Maun, the hub of all delta activities, then gear up to be poled into the delta on mokoros, small two-person dugout canoes. It takes us roughly thre hours to reach our campsite in the middle of the delta, making our way slowly through knee-deep water filled with reeds, lillies and lots of flies. Not quite as civilised as punting on the River Cam, but still a unique experience as we kick back and watch the world float by. On our first day in the delta, ... read more

The people in Botswana really love Botswana. They love their President they are proud simple people. Some have much and some have nothing. Those that have nothing seem to enjoy life more. Life is more simple. They find such joy in waving to everyone they pass, everytime we drive, everyone we pass waves to us. Sure being anglo we are somewhat a minority, but there are plenty here, so it is notthat they are excited/surprised to see us, they are just overly joyed by friendliness. They all say hello to everyone. We went for a drive around some local villages, I visited a local pottery and we explored the roads. Everyone as usual waved. (side thought... FREE HUGS would do quite well here) :) We found this road that was not yet paved,m but has been ... read more

Hello All! I am testing out this new travel blog site so that I can update everyone on my travel adventures. My flight leaves tomorrow, and it will take about 2 days to get to Gaborone, the capital of Botswana. I am not sure how I will be able to contact people, but I am counting on being able to reach an internet cafe at some point in my trip. Thanks for all the support and advice you all have given me! See you in four months! Love Alex... read more

We left Zimbabawe on July 2th. I was verys sad the whole day. Zimbabwe might be my favorite country in the world, besides home of course! Going to Botswana, they have a very interesting procedure. You have to actually get out of the vehicle and walk across this dirty towel that is supposed to clean your shoes. I don't get it but you have to do it throughout the country. It is supposed to stop some kind of disease. The first twon we were in was called Kasane. The grocery stores were all fully stocked and business was as usual. You could tell that this country has not experienced the same hardship as Zimbabwe. We stayed at a camp just outside of Kasane, which was littered with cats. It made me miss Saydee and Little One ... read more

0 degrees centigrade is a bit less than I bargained for in my light packing, however thankfully Gloria has given me a heap of blankets (5 to be exact) and a couple extra fleece type pullovers. At night I sleep like a fetus in the middle of the bed with pants, a hooded sweatshirt (pulled tight), gloves and fuzzy socks then I bury myself under 5 blankets and put a pillow on each side as a barracade. Did I mention it is cold? The day time feels rather warm, but 17 c is actually probably not too warm and I think that has been the max. The flights getting here were many and the waits were long but stepping off the plane in to the chilled air was refreshing. Gloria greeting me with her lovely accent, ... read more

THE CONTENTS OF THIS BLOG ARE MINE PERSONALLY AND DO NOT REFLECT ANY POSITION OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT OR PEACE CORPS. My first opportunity to travel after arriving in Molepolole for Pre-service Training was to Kasane to shadow a volunteer who completed her two years of service last month. Kasane is situated on the Chobe River in the far north of Botswana near the Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe borders. It is an interesting mix of Botswana culture and western style tourism. It is a long ride from Moleps to Kasane, about thirteen hours, and there is one stretch of road where most of pavement has been replaced with numerous large potholes, so deep and so frequent that our khombi driver often found it easier to drive with the wheels of the van entirely off the road. ... read more

THE CONTENTS OF THIS BLOG ARE MINE PERSONALLY AND DO NOT REFLECT ANY POSITION OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT OR PEACE CORPS. Finally, I am blogging again! We have now been in Botswana for about three months and are sworn in as Peace Corps Volunteers. Sometimes it seems that we have been away from home much longer. It has been a continual learning process and nearly a constant state of not knowing, which is amusing to me because I am aware that I was also in a state of not knowing while back home in the States. However, my illusions of certainty and control were then much more intact. Our time here is beginning to liberate me from such fallacies. I will do my best to cover the past three months in the next few blogs. I ... read more

Shashe Bible Training College It was an amazing feeling driving into the Bible College after so many years! It had been raining and there was green grass everywhere! To arrive 'ka pula' (with rain) is a real blessing and we did feel blessed to be back after so many years away! We checked out our old house, the swimming pool, workshop, the Bible College buidings and met up with Dave Long who was there with some AEC (Africa Evangelical Church) young people on a conference. I took a photo of Colin and the boys outside Comrades' House. This dormitory block was built using donations from Colin and a group of runners who completed the Comrades' marathon in South Africa. It was great to catch up with MmaSepunki, who had worked for us for many years and ... read more

Return to Botswana Having worked in Botswana for 17 years it was an amazing feeling to be heading back there for a visit after 11 years away! Our sons, Michael and Joel, who had been studying in Singapore, met us at Joburg airport. Amidst the excitement of not having seen Joel for 6 months and Michael for a year, we still remembered to take the family self-portrait! After a special evening with friends in Joburg, we were in the air again and touching down in Gaborone. It was sooo good to see so many of our friends at the Sir Serestse Khama International Airport to meet us. In some ways it almost felt like we hadn't left! Surprisingly, our Setswana came back and we had fun using it again! Gaborone has really changed: new shopping complexes, ... read more
