Is it worth leaving it all behind?

Should we leave our easy lives in the US for a small town in Mexico? Or is it a big mistake?

A great opportunity has come up for me to move to a small apartment in Mexico with my boyfriend and our dog...but I would have to leave my easy, well-paying job and the life I have built up in the states. Is it worth leaving this job, a great apartment in a great part of SF and a great group of friends and family to go to a small town where I only know one person?

I want to do something big and adventurous before my boyfriend and I settle into a suburban life. We have been offered a great deal on a furnished 1 bedroom in a town we have been two twice and adore. We would go down to take Spanish lessons, continue to make art, and unwind from the materialistic lifestyle of the US. We know something like this won't come up again as we are both in our late 20's/early 30's and will want to start a family. We would freelance design to earn our living money and stay for at least 6 months.

I know this is an adventure of a lifetime but it seems to all be happening very fast. We would have to move down there within a a month and a half.

It is so scary to leave the comforts of our home...is it worth all the trouble? Worth losing the easy job we will not be able to get back? Reply to this

what is your job? couldn't you ask for them to hold it for you?
they just might if you say you will be back in 6 months and that you are just taking a short sabbatical - many people are doing it, and they can still go back to their former lives - that is if you want you former life back after such a life changing expereince. Reply to this

Hello HollyGo 😊

I think u have more to gain than to lose by moving to Mexico for a while. U can get another cushy job and appartment when u get back to the US. U do have experience and references afterall. When we want to do something adventurous we can always think up reasons not to and when we do decide to be adventurous afterall the fears we have about it will not matter at all in your life in 10 years from now. I can still remember the moment I decided to take the plunge and backpack around Europe instead of doing something sensible(keeping my money for university to buy nice clothes and enjoy a luxurious student existance, :D). I just dismissed all my fears because they were going round and round in my head and decided to travel aroud Europe with the guy I was seeing at the time. I was sitting on the top deck at the front of one of those big red London buses going down Oxford street when I made the decision. I felt so free and just wanted to get off the bus at the next stop so I could phone my boyfriend to tell him I have decided. What I had to lose turned out to be way more than I anticipated. My parents were angry and decided that I am not allowed to go to Univerity(they were paying for it) because of this and they would not answer the letters I wrote them. Now 19 years later I am certain I made the right decision despite everything. That trip introduced me to may passion for travel.

I love these two quotes, they always inspire me:

"As we grow older, it's not the things we did that we often regret, but the things we didn't do."

"Don't fear failure so much that you refuse to try new things. The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions: could have, might have, and should have."

I took the plunge, and I haven't regretted it once. Believe in yourself! What's the worst thing that can happen?

Thank you for your great replies!

Travelingmum- I did ask if a sabbatical was possible and was turned down. I would have to use my PTO only.

Mell and Lanz- Thank you for your inspiring stories and quotes. You guys are right. This is the right decision. Reply to this

If you have had this passion for travel since you were young, listen to what's within. I gave the lot up and its been fantastic. Good luck! Reply to this

I love that line.

Are there any other great stories out there of people making similar decisions?

Hi Julie,

It sounds as though you've already made what most of us here would consider the right decision. If you start to doubt it reread this quote - from msg 1 ;-)

A great opportunity.........I want to do something big and adventurous .......... We have been offered a great deal on a furnished 1 bedroom in a town we have been two twice and adore......................an adventure of a lifetime

Wow Holly...I really envy you. Although I am only 22 and just started really working full-time, I keep having this urge to just take off for a while (at least 6 months) and just go off exploring. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to build up the, sorry for the language heh, balls to do so.

If you have an opportunity to do something like this, then I would definitely tell you to go for it. Hopefully I'll be able to do the same sometime in the near future.

All the quotes are great btw...really make you think. Reply to this
