Hello. You can walk across the friendship bridge at Lao Cai (Vietnam) to Hekou (China) and get the bus to Kunming from there. The bus station is only a couple of minutes walk down the road from the border. We got the sleeper bus from Kunming to Hekou at the end of January (2007) and it cost us RMB109. Just to warn you - it was a bit of a bumpy ride - there seemed to be only a muddy track at one point and it twisted and turned round some rather steep mountain sides. Hope this helps and happy travels, Vikki. Reply to this

Hello ON,
My memory is a bit vague, but as I recall the bus from Hekou to Kunming was supposed to be an 8 hour trip but took 10 or 11 hours. Not sure how many buses do the reverse trip but I think there were 3 buses a day did Kunming to Hekou. We got the late bus (I think it left at about 9:30pm) because we didn't want to get to Hekou when the border was closed.
Sorry I can't be more helpful. Vikki.
