my self and partner are going on a trip across Asia, as part of our trip we would like to cross Myanmar on a 500cc motorbike.
i have read on the net that you can not enter Myanmar in one border and leave on another . is this true????
i called the embassy to ask and was told that it is true but the man i spoke to was vage and im not sure he understood what i was saying.

You will need to ship it to India I'm afraid. Reply to this

Myanmar has two borders, external and internal. For example, you could cross from Mae Sot or elsewhere in norhtern Thailand into Myanmar, but you would be limited to about 30km into the country before you reached the first internal border cutting off an area over which you have to fly.

To go inland from Thailand you would have to cross at Ranong down south, from which (I have heard) you can travel overland to Yangon (or vice versa). No idea about the Indian borders. Reply to this

Travel Thailand and then back to Singapore to ship it to India, thru the north you have to overcome China's inexplicable law that says you can come in but can't ride it, only Chinese can ride/drive?
Good luck with that one!
Have EXCELLENT insurance for medical too, hundreds have done it so it is do-able! Reply to this

wicked thanks.
do you think you could get away with not having a bike license? We have an international driving license. Problem is that a bike license would be an extra £500 off budget. But then again travel with out the license would invalidate the insurance which would in turn invalidate our bike documents (or would it?) so then there is no point in having insurance. also not sure if no bike license would cause a problem on crossing borders. i have read on travel by bike site that no one in Asia ever checks. I have tried waying the pros and cons. but still very torn. I say its only 500 extra and we should just do it so that if there is a problem we don’t have to worry. jez says that that it is a waste of money as he’s never had the license before and never had any problems. What to

You have to realise that for every 100 people telling you nobody checks in Asia there are a dozen suffering souls in a VERY uncomfortable cell awaiting deportation with bike confiscated....depending on where you are when it happens . It isn't the wild west, people get away with stuff but people also get busted. You have to weigh up the penalties in the worst case scenario and see if you are willing to have it happen. Get the damn license and insurance and save yourself all that tension every time you cross a border or get pulled over by a copper....they do do that you know....esp foreigners. You are going to have plenty to worry about with the buses and trucks and the "Law of Size plus Momentum Means Right of Way" lol
Where are you starting from and ending up? Reply to this

yes. exactly my thoughts.
traveling though india, napal, bangladesh burma (looking less likely), thailand, Malaysia, then island hopping till australia. i guess we will have to sell the bike after Bangladesh back in india and then fly to thailand and travel by foot, bus, car (maybe) and boat to oz.
i have told jez that the bike license is not a bad idea and better legal than eating bugs in a cell. if anyone should know this its jez from his past experience but then its hard taming a wild one. Reply to this
