Having been the (former) wife of a native, I can honestly say, if you MUST actually drive to Mexico, stay on the main roads, do NOT drive at night (roads suck compared to ours), and the campgrounds are pretty cool places. I myself, being the adventurous type, did go off the beaten path and stayed in several less-than-$20-motels. Pick and choose, but you can find excellent accomodations for REALLY cheap prices. One motel I stayed in was only $8/night; the only clincher was that it had no hot water. What the heck. It was Mexico in the summertime. What did I need hot water for? Lol!! And if you speak the language, SOOO much the better.
