Malaria Medication how long do you need to take for prevention?
17 years ago, February 14th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #10723
I was prescribed Lariam by my doctor for 12 months travel in South America. I have taken Lariam before and had no problems with. However, i have only ever taken for periods no longer than 3 months. It is stated not to take Lariam for any longer than 3 months for prevention. I am wondering what is the best option after my 3 months on Lariam is up.

Do i stop taking malaria prevention meds for the next 9 months i am travelling in South America or do I have to move onto a different med such as Doxy or Chloroquine?

Are Malaria Meds a must for travel within South America or just for the over precocious traveler?

I would suggest looking up the Centre of Disease Control website and finding out the region-specific information and what malaria medication you need. This is where most doctors get their information from. I was in Peru awhile back and I was fine even though I was in the highlands mountainous area. If I had wanted to go into the jungle malaria meds would have been required. Reply to this
