I've spent the last 3 months in Sydney living in Bondi Beach - it's like Ladbrook Grove but by the sea!
I've just booked a trip to the Red Center via - seemed pretty good value.

Check out the North side beachlife - Manly Beach which is only 15minutes by Jet Cat or 30 mins by ferry from the centre of Sydney. There is a good website called manlylife.com.au which has accomodation options, things to do, a gig guide, photos of the beach, the surf etc, etc so you can get an idea what its like. Check it out. Yeah it's easy to fill it out.. but it's hard for them to approve you I think that's what I hear from some people anyway.. and they're really strict about it as well. It's way harder than getting one for the UK.. but that's just what people have told me.. I'm not sure if it's true. Reply to this

heya
i'm an aussie (though i live in the north)
depending on what you wanna do, and what your into will determine your australian experience
being alone is no dramas, australians are a nice, rude, but nice mob, and foreigners tend to fit in easily
if you want to settle down in any town, share houses are the best option, widely availible and there is a long established history throughout the country, check out john birrinhams comical share housing tales set in brisbane in "he died with a falafel in his hand"
the list of things to do in sydney is never ending but do make sure you catch the ferry around the harbour, check out the GAP, and kilbilly house, jump of near the zoo and do a little bit of bushwalking, and generally just wander around. sure bondi is nice, but slightly over- rated, there is a beaut little walk from bondi to manly that passes through 6 beaches (i think) and gives you a bit of a chance to check out some stuff of the tourist
also get your self along to a festival, it is a hellva lot of fun, not to mention a good way to meet people, and a bit of a tradition just have a look on the triple j (a national australian youth music station) website
in order to travel around australia a car is really the only way cause you kinda need the freedom
remember the country towns of australia are just as intresting as any city, just wait till you walk into your first "outback pubs", and whatever you do don't dress in white, and DON'T wash your car every night regardless of destination, i.e. middle of deset with 1 road with bull dust1!!!
