Hiking in the Rotorua area

Need help in finding a great hiking trail to do in the area around Rotorua/Tokoroa in October 2011.

Hey,

I am going to New Zealand in October and aimed to do a couple hikes while there. Initially wanted to do the Tongariro Crossing , but may not be able to get there as I am on quite a tight schedule.
I will be in Tokoroa for 3 nights, so if anybody knows of a great hiking trail in the area (maybe within a 1 hour drive of Tokoroa) please suggest!

I am aiming for a full day hike (5-8 hrs) and if there is a peak involved, then all the better!
