Hi,

My girlfriend and I will be leaving for a years travelling as of April this year and wondered how much people thought was a realistic amount of cash to take to get us around South America (3 months), Oz and NZ (2 months), South East Asia (6 months) (Excluding China and Japan) and India (1 month).

We already have our flights and trips paid for so the figure only relates to spending money really! We realise everyone is different and this is a bit of an impossible question to some degree but any input would be of benefit!

Thanks,

I have never been to South America but SE Asia and India will be your cheapest of the other places you are traveling. OZ is quite expensive and we found NZ to be the cheaper of the 2 places (OZ vs. NZ).

My husband and I spent $1,500 total for our expenses in Vietnam for 3 weeks staying in hotels/hostels from $10-$30 a night. We just got back from 3 weeks in India and our food/souvenirs/entrance fees were about $1,100 as we did a tour with Intrepid travel.

Hope this gives you a rough idea but if you will being staying in dorms your costs will be lower. Reply to this

Hello John

Having not been to South America but to the other areas, I can confirm what Elyse and Pete have said. South East Asia and India will be cheap - it is still the best value travel region in the world. Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia are all well priced. Haven't been to either Vietnam or Laos, but the same applies there from what I believe. Also heard that Sri Lanka is very well priced too.

NZ will be a considerable increase in price and Australia will jump even more. Put it this way, many Australians now travel to Asia for their holidays because it is cheaper than holidaying at home, even when factoring in the cost of the long-haul airfares. The very strong Australian dollar is one reason for this.

Re prices in Australia, have a look at this thread: How to budget for each country? where a couple of Aussies (me included) discuss the prices here. This thread is also very useful for the other comments on it as well. Reply to this

I just read this blog by Theroadiscalling and thought of you.

http://www.travelblog.org/Central-America-Caribbean/Guatemala/Western-Highlands/San-Pedro-La-Laguna/blog-682870.html

This couple has just started on Year 2 traveling and they talk about how much they have spent and all the places they have visited. They state in their blog if you have specific questions about how much they spent in each country they will give you specifics. Reply to this
