What insurance policy would be best?

Hi,

I am planning on travelling for a year this April and I am looking to find out what travel insurance anyone can recommend. I am planning on visiting most of South America, NZ and OZ, a lot of South East Asia and India. I will be looking to participate in some extreme sports such as bunjee and maybe a sky dive. Can anyone help as to what type of insurance would be most suitable and if possible where I could get this at a good price?

Thanks,

John! Reply to this

John,

I fully believe in travel insurance after we had to cancel our trip 4 weeks before our departure to India in December 2010. We had to cancel due to my father in law being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer with 4-6 weeks to live. Travel Guard was the company we used and they were great with getting us our money back, almost $3,000USD. They also offer custom policies that you can add on extreme sports. It lists which sports they cover. They also do have specifics on which country they will insure.

As for pricing it depends on how long you travel. Example, for 2 people to go to India for 3 weeks we paid $150USD total. I also just purchased a policy with them for 2 people to Indonesia for 10 days total cost $84USD.

Check it out and see if it works best for you. Hope this helps you out.

We used 'InsureandGo' for our trip which was meant to last for over a year (we came home early). We choose this company for a few reasons. The policy covered hiking up to 6000m (most don't go above 4500m), the policy could be extended on the road past the initial 13 month policy we took out and it was a decent price. For us both we paid around £500 but we chose to pay the high excess, if required, for medical and we were not covered for theft or loss of things like our lap top or camera. We just thought if anything happened that was important enough to have use the insurance then the £300 excess wouldn't be such a big deal. For us it was important to be able to get out of serious situations or get good medical treatment rather than replace our camera. Reply to this

We used World Nomads, because at the time, they were the only company that offered policies for more than a year, that you could extend while travelling. We wanted to be flexible in this. They also covered a lot of things that other policies didn't, like caving, elephant trekking etc.

They were more expensive than some others, but the important thing is being covered should something happen while you're doing something slightly unusual in an off-the-beaten-track place. Reply to this

Hi John,

The most important things to consider are;
1) You're away long term - a year at this stage, but you may want to extend that, so a policy which you can renew and make claims online would be good.

2) You've mentioned extreme sports (you are coming to NZ after all!), so they need to be covered.

3) At the end of the day material possessions are replaceable (just back up your photos!), but your health isn't. Get a policy with good hospital cover and, in the worst case senario, get you back home to family.

I've also used World Nomads. Easy process, but fortunately never had to claim for anything. Reply to this
