Questions on Phi Phi accomodation & Bangkok-Siem Reap overland journey

Questions regarding cheap lodging in Ko Phi Phi for a single traveller and the Bangkok to Siem Reap overland journey in March... answers would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! I'm planning to go to Thailand as part of my Southeast Asia trek, arriving in Phuket from KL on Mar. 11 and taking a boat out to Ko Phi Phi the next day. I was just wondering if anyone would know if there are good bungalows/hostels in KPP for THB 500 per night or less? I will be travelling alone, so any place cheap yet safe and decent is good enough for me. Planning on staying there until Mar. 15, then head back to Phuket to catch a bus to Bangkok.

Also, has anyone done the whole Bangkok to Siem Reap overland trip? Can anyone give me suggestions as to what to take, where to go, and how much I should allocate for the whole journey? I don't want to take the airplane via Bangkok Air as this is too expensive, while affordable Air Asia only goes to Phnom Penh and I don't want to backtrack as my plan is to take the bus from SR to PP then another bus to HCMC/Saigon as my last leg.

Thanks! Reply to this

We just took the bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap last week.

Im not going to lie to you...its a pain in the ***! But if you are prepared for it you will be fine!!

We bought our ticket at our guest house in Bangkok (actually called My House but you can get tickets anywhere and they are all pretty similar). Our ticket cost 400baht. Very cheap compared to 6000b Air Asia ticket!!

We left Bangkok at 6.30am in a minibus and drove for a few hours to the border. At the border we went into a restaurant where we waited for about 2.5 hours for other people to arrive! That was annoying.

Finally we left the restaurant at about 1pm and drove in a pick-up truck 15 mins to the border. We then walked over the border (no probs at all) and on the other side we got a shuttle bus to the Poipet bus station (only 5 mins).

This is where the fun begins! We got on our bus to Siem Reap there...it was quite a new bus but no air-con. So it was pretty hot and stuffy. Not much room either!

The road between Poipet and Siem Reap is only about 150km but takes about 6 hours. Its a b*tch!! It is literally a dirt track and very dusty.

As there is no air-con we had the windows open, but quickly closed them as our mouths were full of dust!! The driver was pretty good though as he would avoid driving behind big trucks so there wasnt too much dust.

We stopped twice on the journey - once at a restaurant for food (quite expensive compared to everywhere else, but you're really hungry now so you don't care!!) and once for drinks and toilet.

We finally arrived in Siem Reap at 8.30pm.

I had heard a lot of negative reports about this journey, but in a way I actually quite enjoyed it! It is a real adventure, and we made some nice friends on the bus!! Just be prepared for a lot of waiting around and bumpy roads!

As long as you have some clothes on that you dont mind getting dusty and some loo roll, and plenty of water, you will be fine.

We also stayed at the hostel recommended by our bus driver in SR. It was only 200baht and very nice (hot water/tv etc). Near to the temples but slightly out of town. It was called Victory Guest House.

We also got the bus down to PP and then onto Saigon (where we are now!!).

Hope you have fun!!

hi rich and zoe, thank you for the detailed account of your adventures! i am completely torn between saving money and wasting time doing overland OR spending heaps and getting there hassle-free... my dilemma is that i only have a month and a half to go explore SEA and i was just talking to a friend of mine who's done overland quite a number of times, his advise is to take a flight so i can soak in all the sights instead of getting grumpy on the road. my plan is to take air asia to phnom penh, take a bus to siem reap then fly to hanoi, veeeery expensive! i still have months to think about this... but i'm leaning towards flying, it's only 1,883 Baht for a March 21 trip... thanks and i'll be following your travels here! stay safe and have fun 😊 Reply to this
