Heading to Nola June 16-23 for the first time. A friend has a convention to attend so I told her I would scope out the coldest beer, most amazing food, and the best tunes for when she gets out (which, I'm guessing is just about everywhere, but it sounded like a nice reason to go). I'm having the most trouble finding a cheap place to stay.

I'm having the most trouble finding a cheap place to stay. The first three nights, I can do whatever I want, wherever I want to do it. Then, my friend meets me down there for her convention and not knowing how good transportation is or where the buses go, I'm guessing I should stay somewhere near there, unless someone tells me I can stay somewhere else for dirt cheap and the public transportation is easy enough to navigate back to the Ernest N Morial Convention Center area to meet her every afternoon into the evening.
I've got a friend that works at a couple bars in the area that I for sure am checking out, but other than that, the trip is fair game.
Anyway, I'm putting together random places people tell me about or I hear about. The boyfriend is a fan of Anthony Bourdain so I even threw in some places AB went there. Why not.
This is what I have mapped out for possible places to check out
Would love any feedback you might have for places to go, eat, do, be aware of. Mostly stay. Cheap.
Reply to this When I went to Nola, it was the Spring right after Katrina and I went down to help on a mission trip. One of the best things we did though was eat at Johnny's. It's got some of the best crawfish in the whole town.
Reply to this Thanks for the suggestion! I added Johnny's to my map!

As far as cheap eating you can find small pubs, restaurants and street vendors that will not cost you a fortune. But, some of the great chefs of the world are in Nola so hopefully you can splurge one night and dine on some world class food.
You will never tire of the music. It is a great city.
Reply to this Thursday night at Vaughn's is a must to hear Kermit Ruffins - take a taxi
Tuesday night at The Maple Leaf in Uptown to hear Rebirth Brass Band
Both are away from the French Quarter and a true New Orleans experience.
