This April 1-30, if ever you are in the Philippines and find yourself in southern Luzon, there's the Magayon Festival 2011 in Albay. From the festival's promotional poster:

"Come visit Albay province on the Southeastern part of the island of Luzon for a month of merrymaking, great food, good music, exhibits and outdoor activities.

Among the activities to be held are concerts, mountain climbing (Three Peaks in One Summer Festival), climb outreach, extreme sports competitions, food fairs, trade fairs, and more!

Magayon festival happens on April 1-30 all over the province of Albay. Majority of the activities will be held on the Old Albay District of the capital, Legazpi City. Please check http://www.facebook.com/pages/Magayon-Festival/140394179308522?sk=app_4949752878 for the roster of events."

Here are some festivals for the month of April in the Philippines:
lifted from http://www.philippinecountry.com/festivals.html

1. CUTUD LENTEN RITES
San Fernando, Pampanga
16-18 April

Prayer of a different meaning during the Lenten season, when villagers of San Pedro, Cutud, engage in the act of self-flagellation. This ancient ritual is executed in the morning of Good Friday during the Holy Week. Backs, arms, and legs are cut and then struck with burillo beats. The climax to this occasion happens at midday, when penitents are literally nailed to their waiting crosses.

2. KALILANG
Marawi City
April 10-1 5

The charter anniversary celebration of Marawi City. A celebration of Muslim culture, including songs, dances, crafts and food.

3. KADAUGAN SA MACTAN
Cebu City
April 27

A complete reenactment of the Battle of Mactan, in which Magellan's Forces were defeated by Lapu-lapu and his warriors, resulting in the death of the Spanish explorer.

4. TANDUYONG
San Jose City
4th Sunday

A celebration of the harvest featuring colorful costumes and street dancing. Focuses on the contribution of onions, garlic and other vegetables to the city's economy

5. CONQUER MT. APO
Kapatagan, Davao del Sur
April 1-5

A climbing expedition to the top of Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak.

6. BANKARERA
Penablanca, Cagayan
April 21

A boat rowing race held on the Pinacanauan river in Callao Caves Tourist Zone.

7. CASSAVA
Camotes Islands, Cebu.
Last week of April

Highlights many uses of this root crop. Features cooking contests.

8. BINIRAYAN
San Jose, Antique
late April

Celebrates the re-enactment of the landing of ten Bormeo Datus in 13th Century.

But I have to agree with Hana. The Magayon Festival is THE festival for the month of April, not to mention its is still within the whale shark season of nearby Donsol.

Maybe members from other countries could post Festivals and Dates from their own countries also? Reply to this

Hey, Hana and Ihcahieh: thanks for the info. Except for the Magayon Festival, I have honestly not been to any of the other festivals! But true. MAGAYON is THE FESTIVAL for April. I wouldn't mind meeting those whale sharks again! Reply to this

Hi all,

Thank you for sharing information regarding all around. I want to add my suggestion here. The Vegetarian Festival is a religious festival annually held on the island of Phuket in southern Thailand. It attracts crowds of spectators because of many of the unusual religious rituals that are performed. Many religious devotees will slash themselves with swords, pierce their cheeks with sharp objects and commit other painful acts.

Hope you will like it.
Regards,
- Phuk chale

In Japan, you HAVE to time your trip around either cherry blossom hanami, flower viewing, in Spring or, if your there during Winter, head north to Hokkaido go to the Sapporo and Otaru Snow Festival.

During Summer, head down to Shikoku and check out one of the many dance festivals, the Awa Odori Festival. It is just amazing to watch all those dancers go around for hours dancing. The sheer volume of people is just crazy.

A word of advice. If you do come to Japan during New Years, don't expect ANY kind of celebration in Tokyo. New Years is a very private holiday in Japan, but head down to Kyoto and hit up hatsumode, or the first temple visit of the year, with the hundreds of temple hoppers. Reply to this
