What is the longest you have been awake for, at a stretch, because of travelling?
In recent years, the longest I have been awake for was 48 hours. My flight from Delhi, India to Istanbul was delayed 12 hours. Because of that, I didn't make it to Istanbul on time for my connecting flight to Germany, which involved more awake hours. I finally got to sleep for 5 hours, after a dinner in Istanbul that I forced myself to stay awake for, because I wanted to experience a little of Istanbul, even if it was for only an hour.
Around 12 years ago, I stayed awake for 3 days in Barcelona. I also stayed awake for 3 days when I was 15, on a school trip to Wales. I don't do things like this anymore, becasue I dont think staying awake for days at a time is healthy.
Usually, when I have an early morning flight, I dont go to sleep the night before it, unless I am at home, becasue I dont want to risk things like being locked into the guesthouse and not being able to find any staff to let me out.
Reply to this I was reading this on Wired.com today;
Jet Lag May Cause Stupidity
I did something similar going from Thailand to Brazil - 48 hours door to door - but I confess I did sleep for a few hours in the floor of Dubai airport...
Reply to this I'm stuck in K.L airport at the moment after a long flight and with a train in the morning and no hotel. Pretty tired. Ali, I should have hit you up for a free bed!!
Reply to this The worst I've done for travelling-induced sleep deprivation was an overnight bus to Tokyo (after a day at work), then an overnight flight to Auckland arriving mid-morning.
I figured holding out til that night would get me into the right sleep pattern quicker, but I was absolutely shattered by the third night. At least the stiff neck was feeling a bit better :-)
Reply to this I awoke for my longest days without sleep at Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda. I spent the morning on safari and the afternoon driving back to Kampala and then to Entebbe for a 9:30 pm flight to Amsterdam. I can't sleep on planes. The next day I spent from 5:30 am to 1:30 pm at Schipol waiting for my flight to Minneapolis. I wish I had spent the 45 euros for the pod hotel to get some sleep, but I spent the money on European candy that my kids grew up with, but is not available in the States. From Minneapolis it was then on to Denver, followed by a two hour drive home...I let my wife drive as I would likely have fallen asleep at the wheel. I got to bed at 10 pm Mountain time. Total time awake was 47 hours. A close second was flying from Bangkok via Narita and LAX to Denver, and then the drive home.
I wish airlines would allow no cost stop overs both going and coming home, as I do take advantage on the one stopover they allow on the way there.
Reply to this I think ours was about 40 something hours. our flight from Singapore to Athens via Qatar was delayed about 7 hours. We spent the night at Singapore airport (which is pretty cool). and then sat in a half-dazed state in Qatar until we caught our flight to Athens. I think that was one of the best sleeps i've had in awhile once my head hit the pillow in Greece haha.
Reply to this My longest was 52 hours.
I had a flight from Vancouver to London that left at 5pm, and I had awoken at around 9 that morning. Landed in london for a 13 hour stopover, in which I took the heathrow express into the city to meet up with friends that I had met in vietnam years earlier. Then I had the 9 hour flight to Delhi, India, which of course was delayed. I cant sleep on planes, or any form of transportation really. I finally arrived in Delhi during the hottest part of the day, in the hottest part of the year, severely dehydrated from the rum/dry air on the plane. I remember lighting up a cigarette after i was dropped off by my taxi, and nearly falling on my ass in the street from dizziness and exhaustion. I slept for 18 hours solid after that 😊
