I work as a marine biologist in some pretty cool areas and my favorite recreational sites I've been to are:

1. Nusa Penida/Lembongan, Bali (Blue Corner, Toya Pakeh)
diving with Blue Corner Dive (www.bluecornerdive.com)

2. Port Hardy, BC, Canada (Browning Wall, Deserters Group)
difficult to access but a couple operators out of northern vancouver island
(check out Pacificus)

3. Lizard Island, Northern Great Barrier Reef (mantas, sharks, crazy macro stuff...)
getting there... well, where there's a will there's a way!

4. Pualu Tenggol, Malaysia (but that was many years ago - so not sure status now Reply to this

Pulau Tenggol is still very bare. Not too develop! Still one of my great diving sites.Good visibilty. This Mid Oct Visibity expected 40m and Mid March best time. You can't dive between end Oct to early March as it's monsoon period.Another good place is further north 4 hours by Bus is the Perhentian Islands.Boat ride at the jetty RM40/- one way. From There you can book your dive trip.

Another vote for Bunaken - enjoyed it so much I am heading back for a few days before Gangga, Bangka and Lembeh in January.

Very impressed with the reef health and marine diversity - cant wait to check out Bangka as I have got some good wraps on a particular site there. Reply to this

Cindy, just saw around 50 hammerheads at Protea Banks. visi was only around 20 meters....these guys are shy and when they see you, the run away.

Could only do one dive because of the huge waves...was an interesting ride on the way back....the one where you put your mask on... Reply to this

Well, trust me, on this one I'm pretty spoiled...we had scalloped hammerhead and the giant hammerheads....but nothing to compare to counting the teeth of 150 hammerheads in Galapagos....2 more dive tomorrow...but with way less sharks... Reply to this

NO Sharks at all in Bangka or Bunaken in January - they are all too busy taking up residence beachfront Perth Australia where I live.

Loved the soft corals at Bangka and Sauhong Pinacles IS worth the trip to get there..I understand why it is mentioned as dive guides favourite sites. Glad that its not too heavily promoted 😉

One interesting thing I did notice there was the amount of upcurrents..I expected washing machine currents from my research but had not countered on was quite savage upcurrents. Before I had a chance to grab onto anything I shot up from 37n to 17m back to 24m and then zoom up to 2m EEEEEEK!

Ive since found out from divers forums that the particular site where that happened is considered 'undiveable' in current conditions..inexperienced 17 year old guide with only OW certification could probably have avoided that situation occurring. You need to do negative bouyancy entries at Bangka because of the currents but surely a dive guide would have been told that those smooth shiny slightly domed up patches of water on the surface every few m means upcurrents and I could have been a bit more prepared to deal with them.......or maybe I just need to put some weight on LOL!

Fantastic spot to dive though..and to disconnect. Soft corals and crocodile fish and frog fish always make a nice dive. Reply to this

Hey Peter--

I was re-reading this thread today and need to ask how you rate the Blue Hole? See conversation above.

Ok-- all of you who have participated in this thread in the past.

What are your dive plans for 2012?
What are your dive plans for 2013?

In 2012- we will dive in the Philippines and Hawaii.
In 2013- we will dive in Cuba.
Planning Yap, Palau and Chuuk for 2014.

Let's see your list.

Ola,

Ok, you know me, I don't put my plans ahead online...never know what is the future...but if things go as planed...it's going to be pretty fun!

The blue hole....was blue...and a hole...meaning...a full non-sense marketing dive...no point of doing it. Ok, we went to 42 meters...and what, went with friends to 56 meters 2 months ago, way more fun.

Forget about the blue hole! But we had encounters in Belize with dolphins...down there 20 meters deep...and THAt...was amazing!

For the Philippines, try to go on a liveaboard to Tubbataha, March to June only...got a friend who did it this year too...saw a whaleshark at 30 meters deep (me too...but at 21...)...and he loved it!

Hawai, don't forget the night dive in Kona with the mantas...Shane loves the video...the dive was simply out of this world...

Palau...don't do liveaboard, go land..stay at the Nikko, dive with Sam's...I'll give you the sites...

Truck...happy wreck...didn't do it, same thing for Yap...but end of the day, I've seen my fair...or actually not fair (for others)...share of mantas...

Cuba, did a dive for the fun out of Havana,...nice morning, great people, diving was average....but there is the reef of Las reinas, supposed to be impressive....

My plans...already booked and payed....in 3 weeks, my 108 countries...the week after...sharks in colder water in a new place for me...september...Tif will snorkel, Leslie and I will dive with the seals...and hopefully few whales...november...dive two more countries...one of them supposed to be big!...sharks...no dive in december, but end of Jan, planning the best of the best...when I show the video on youtube to Ali...he went...mad!

2013...well...few more dives...

2014...maybe few more, but I promise...early July 2012, more diving pics are coming...and guess what, I've got new equipement...low and deep...the diving goes on...

Dry from Bangkok...wish you the best for your Odessey....ours is starting in 3 weeks...I plan a lot...but cannot wait to hit the road!!!

Your comments about the Blue hole are similar to our other friends. It was a lot of hoopla for a 1 1/2 hour boat ride.

We are doing a land trip to Yap, Palau and Chuuk so we will take a look at Nikko.

Can't wait to read all these upcoming blogs.

Did couple of Dives in Pulau Weh 2007.We went again recently May 14 2012 5 days.We are Malaysians and flew from Kuala Lumpur direct unlike in 2007 we have to transit in Medan. This time our airfare was cheap Airasia only RM300/.We stayed at PulauWeh Resort 40 minutes ride from Sabang.Weather was great and the Resort was really great 5Star.Good rooms and very clean. We made only 3 dives this time as age is catching up.But was great.Planning to go again in May 2013.I will post some pictures next time. Hey Divers- I am moving to Colombia and want to know about the diving there. I've dived in Panama so I am assuming it is similar. Any info would be nice. Thanks Reply to this

I haven't dived yet Colombia, but this some serious homework on the subject.

In one, if you like the big stuff, there is Malpelo...only liveaboard, not cheap, with the hammerhead if they haven't been overfished yet...you speak of the like of Cocos, Galapagos,...

Than, San Andres, island in the Atlantic side...so less impressive, but still a nice repuation.

You can also do diving around Cartagena, but don't expect world class there...

Hope this help. Reply to this
