How do you pick your next dive destination?

So many places to dive and so little time.

Do you have a giant list of places you want to dive before you can't move around the world?

Do you base your decision on available time vs. distant to dive location?

Do you go just to dive or do you care about seeing the country also?

Does your partner dive or do you need to find things for them to do while you dive? Reply to this

I have a love-hate relationship with diving: once I'm in the water, I love it but, the whole process previous to it, is a nightmare; I don't like boats, as I usually get sea sick and carrying the gear out of the water is sooooo heavy and uncomfortable... also, I'm sorry to say that most of the people I met who were divers were 'too cool for school' and I'm very uncomfortable around people who are trying to hard to be cool (I mean, how 'uncool' is that!)

Anyway... nearly every time we've been diving so far it was because we already were at the destination and it happened to have good diving spots (i.e. Thailand), and not that we picked the destination because of the diving; the only exception is Sipadan in Malaysia: Dax has a friend who owns a diving school in Semporna and we knew diving there was excellent so we went there to dive with him - actually there is not much more to do there other than diving 😊

One of my dream diving destinations is Silfra, in Iceland; so that would be another country I would like to visit because of the diving, even though is not your typical diving destination! Reply to this

For years every vacation we took was a dive vacation. We were perfectly happy exploring the top side and the ocean underneath each island or country we visited. We always found a way to leave the dive hotel and immerse into the culture a bit.

Then we began to explore other lands and we don't dive as much now. Actually, I don't think we've been diving in more than 5 years.
I miss diving. The last time we went diving it has been a longer than we wanted and when we went back in the water we had a healthy respect. We did a shallow dive to adequately check our equipment. That helped with our anxiety. We were a bit anxious...not a lot but a little. A healthy amount.

I laughed at your description of other divers. The majority of the divers on a boat are fun and amazing people. There is usually one person who is a bit too intense for my taste and busy telling I've dived deeper than you,, I've been to more countries than you....

Don't give up the dream.... keep diving.

I choose dive holidays in various ways. I do have list of places that I want to dive which specifically have creatures that I want to see and dive with but I also do research from the internet and dive magazines.
There are many amazing dive destinations but some of them are being ruined by over population and poor waste management so unfortunately some of the places that you dream to dive at turn out being not so great when you actually get there.
The best thing is to get information from other divers and then do your research on the net. Sometimes you will find that other peoples ideas of what a good dive resort is does not meet your expectations. Reply to this

We agree. I know many who like to go back to the same places but we like diving in new locations. Reply to this
