UK-Australia without planes. Shall I, shan't I?

I need some help deciding on the nature of my year's adventure......

I am taking a gap year this year from London, starting in January and ending in September 2010.

I was going to take a flight to Oz and spend some time there (working on the vineyard of my mum's cousin) and in New Zealand (doing WWOOFing). This I still want to do, but I would love to get there without using aeroplanes, and to make the journey a bit more exciting, so that I am not just going from the West to the West.

This is a bit of a sudden change of heart - I have considered it before and would really really love to do it, but just thought it would be a bit of an impossibility for an 18 year-old girl on her own. I still think this really, but wanted to hear some thoughts/inspiration/tips/words of warning from people who have done it.

Or even better, is anyone thinking of making the same trip?? A companion would make everything seem that much more probable!

If I'm gonna do this I need to start planning as soon as possible. Would really appreciate any pearls of wisdom whatsoever anybody has on the subject!

Thanks,
Tilly

Hey!

Check out www.seat61.com

You can take several modes of transport from the UK to Australia... it will take you some time though but you will experience a lot more than if you were sitting on a plane for 24 hours!

Happy Trip!

hey tilly

if you havn't already, do a quick course in self defence, and learn to get mean and tough, especially with bothersome men, especially when you feel threatened, and just be extra carefull;
never ever carry anything for anyone across borders, nor buy drugs, as many sellers are also on the payroll of local police, who get a reward for pointing the finger!!

best option is to travel with someone.(pref. to meet before leaving!) gain travel exp. and become a voyager like the rest of us.

have a great time

Hello Mathilda

You could put a post in the Looking for Travel Companions forum, to find a travel buddy, if you want.
