We want to know how safe travel in Laos is.
We are due to travel from Bangkok in Thailand, north to Luang Prabang, as to avoid the slow boat down the Mekong river. We have heard lots of horror stories with regards to bad road conditions, mad drivers and bandits on the side of the roads. How true are these. Also some people reccomend taking a mini bus as a smoother ride to LP, but aren't these just packed full with too many people anyway?
Also any advice on the Laos to Cambodia border crossing?
We would appreciate any advice/help.

Travel in Laos is very easy today, The slow boat two days on the Mekong is just an experience, but it should be at the dry season ( Nov - March ) the time that the water is not too high, the bad story that you heard about was the past, today there are many tourist passing Laos to Vietnam and Cambodia, I think Laos still one of the peacefull country on earth. If you are easy traveller or if you have enought time to travel, you should better take local Bus, since it its cheaper and more adventure.
Luang Prabang is the town that you will never miss, you will want to stay long instead of the time you plan to stay , besiding Laos there are many French or western food here, peoeple are nice, city is dominated by the two rivers, there are many temples, it is only a place that you will still see the Alms by the Monks at early morning.
www.blue-lagoon-cafe.ch serve Lao and Swiss classic food, please stop by whenever you are in Luang Prabang.

Reply to this Laos is pretty much on the main backpacker trail. No danger at all (well, more accurately, same level of danger as Thailand/Vietnam/Malaysia).
