Border Crossing Procedures

Whats it like?

*This question mainly refers to South American and Central American countries*

Im planning my trip, and one thing I'm unsure about is the procedure to cross borders into another country. Im betting it varies from country to country, but can someone give me a general rundown of how it works?

Also, I've done some research on acquiring visas for entry into countries, and all it says is to call the embassy. I cant call for information right now because Im deployed and we dont have reliable phone services over here. I want to be prepared when I call when I get back to the states, so can someone explain to me the process of getting visas? Also, is calling the embassy the only way to obtain a visa?

Thanks All! -Clark

Clark i don´t know if it is too late to answer your questions but i will try. i believe the only countries that require visas from americans are brazil ($100) US and praguay ($50). click here for more info http://www.projectvisa.com/ there are companies that you can use to get visas but they are expensive , you can do a google search for visa expediting, for example http://www.passportexpress.com/ . crossing the borders is the fun part. for the most part it is straight forward but at times you will shaken down for bribes. also dont exchange money at the borders, the rates are bad and sometimes the money is fake. that is why it is a good idea to keep a supply of $1 and a few $5 bills in good condition. ie if the bill is torn, worn or written on you probably won´t be able to use it.

Hi mate,

I guess you are alreadyon your way through LATAM. I´m sure that there is no need for a visa in Argentina and Uruguay and as said above American´s do require one for Brazil, probably also for Venezuela.

Nevertheless, where are you going? Unless you plan a long roadtrip it would be difficult to visit many countries. Distances are veeery long.

My recommended places? Either go through the west south american coast, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina or the east coast, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.........

Have a nice trip

p.s. brivery is a frequent practive in LATAM, but try to help us make it up and not do it. That´s something we are not proud of. Reply to this
