Do you travel to the most dangerous places on earth just to say you did?

I've been to Burma and never felt in danger, in fact it's probably one of the safer places to go as long as you keep your opinions of their government to yourself. It is my understanding that the foreigners who get into trouble in Burma (particularly the journalists) are usually just kicked out of the country. That being said, if one tries to go to the poppy growing regions, which are rebel controlled and off limits to foreigners, it is probably dangerous. Reply to this

are we talking dangerous or just plain stupid?

Why not go to Mecca wearing only womens underwear?
Or lie down on a corner of a German Autobahn?
Or visit Alice Springs with a t-shirt saying 'Ozzies Are Gay' on it.

Walk down any British small town high street on a Saturday night around 11pm.

Now thats dangerous! Reply to this

Deleted_36417 - I've just been to Yap, Federated States of Micronesia and from all acounts Chuuk really is a VERY lawless place! Your description of Papua New Guinea is a bit contrary to my impression of the place though - everyone I've met who's been there has told me that the towns are extremely dangerous and you can't go out at night, but that the people who live in the jungles and mountains are among the warmest, kindest, most welcoming anywhere! and who travels there to hang around in the towns anyway?

Like u said, most places are not as dangerous as we're led to believe. I've lived in Oman and my impression of Yemen is as a very safe country with very friendly people. My dad has traveled in Libya and had a wonderful experience. I have 2 friends who work in Burma and they seem very happy and have safely traveled all over the country. I've just got back from a week in Mindanao in the southern Philippines which all foreign embassies warn against all travel to. So far it is my favourite place in the country - beautiful landscapes, exotic cultures, lovely people and a plenty of really genuine experiences without another tourist in sight. Reply to this

as for Belarus being dangerous - the idea is ridiculous! I lived in Russia for a year and know countless people, Russians, Brits and Americans alike who have been there on holiday Reply to this
