What is your favorite book to read when on the road? Not necessarily travel or location related, but what do you like to read when on the road?
I enjoyed
Smile When You're Lying by Chuck Thompson. I'm a big fan of William Dalrymple as well, anything I've read of his I've enjoyed, but would recommend
City of Djinns or
In Xanadu to get started.
Reply to this We just finished 15 months of travel in Africa and read over 50 books. The one thing I love about travelling is having the time to read and being open to reading anything that comes your way. In West Africa it was difficult to find English books so I read anything I could get my hands on and found some great authors that I am continuing to read today. I enjoyed reading books by African authors and definitely books related to the country and continent we were visiting. As others have said before, this is a huge subject and I could go on and on! Thanks for all the great tips in the other posts, I have added to my "must read list"!
Reply to this Some of the books I like to bring are (not all at the same time!):
The Monk Who Sold his Ferrari - Robyn Sharma
The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) - Don Miguel Ruiz
Uriel's Machine - Uncovering the Secrets of Stonehenge, Noah's Flood and the Dawn of Civilization by Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas
The 12th Planet - Zecharia Sitchin
I have very fond memories of reading the Four Agreements
Reply to this Kafka's Methamorfosis is a very good book. I read it over and over again.
Reply to this Hi,
I love to read Pablo Coehlo - great books for a trip.
Reply to this I've recently discovered it's great to read novels set in the locations I'm visiting (especially if they're based around historical fact so I can learn something too!). Recently enjoyed The Birth of Venus (I forget who by), as I just went to Florence.

I love doing that too. 😊 It makes me notice more about the place, and take a deeper interest in it. Sometimes books set in locations are what inspire me to go travel to that place in the first place.
Same with movies. There is a place in Dublin which shows alternative movies, and those are the ones which get me interested in certain countries and places. I will be going to Dublin in December, so hopefully they will be showing at least one that interests me. Their website is
www.ifi.ie There is also another cinema in Dublin called 'The Lighthouse', which shows more palatable movies for those who are interested in alernative movies but find the ones at the IFI a bit heavy.
Reply to this Well - this may be not a Favorite book, but...
Once I were ferry in Baltic sea - Tallink Festival, i guess and I thought it could be real time to read book about ferry Estonia tragedy!
After this book I could not sleep and calm down till I weren't on dry land! 😊 :D
Reply to this Good but I am reading few important travel blog while i am traveling.
Reply to this Wherever I go, I take Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. It's sad and funny at the same time. It's so incredibly written I never get bored reading it, even if it's the 6th time. It's the best book ever written and everyone should read it.
And now I'm waiting for someone to post a message that I'm spamming this forum promoting certain book.:P

I didnt have any such suspicions, until you suggested it. 😉
Reply to this I don't usually have on 'genre' of book I read- I've read all sorts of books while travelling, from light easy reads to more serious. I do however sometimes like to read 'travel' books when I'm travelling, it motivates me! My favorite book like this is 'Eat Pray Love'. I find this such an honest, warm book, and I could read it over and over again.
Reply to this I love books like "The Seven Mountain Travel Books " which is really a wonderful book i feel great while reading this book on a holiday trips.
Reply to this I'm not fond of reading books when I'm traveling or even I'm not, I just take a nap until we reach our destination. But there's one book that really makes me wanna read it until its very end...Its entitled "The India Fan" its a fiction book that you'll surely be interested once you started.

Reply to this I want horror novel book and really enjoyed reading it. when I'm traveling, I want to scare people by telling them the story I've read.
Reply to this I love reading! At home I'll browse the bookshop for hours to select a new novel to perfectly fit my mood, when away I'll read anything and everything! Sometimes the most trashy rubbish is just the best read for a Thai beach, othertimes a dense metaphysical novel will draw you in and make that 20 hour train ride a breeze!
I guess, ideally, I'd want a novel or travelogue that is set in, or references, the place where I’m reading it. Although set in Tibet, I remember reading “The Snow Leopard” by Peter matthiessen when travelling in Ladakh, India. The culture he referenced was similar, as was his quest to see a Snow Leopard and Bharal (blue sheep), the difference being he saw one, we didn’t - did see Bharal though! - an amazing book, part travelogue, part mystic adventure and homage to Buddhism. On the same trip I also read “Midnights Children” by Salman Rushdie and “The Age of Kali” by William Dalrymple. One magical fiction, the other factual, but both incredible books and great to read in situ! I also read “The Hangmans Journal” by Sashi Warrier, an amzing book recounting the story of a retired hangman in India as he recalls his dark trade while relaxing in his village.
Reply to this i seldom bring a book when travelling especially when it's my first time in a certain place..i usually prefer admiring the places I pass by.
but if ever I'd bring a book, it would be The Alchemist or The Shack
Reply to this I also like to read Detective story books when I'm traveling, especially if you don't have anything to do or tired watching the view. It's more of a kill time while waiting to arrive on the destination.
