I want to become a better writer...
This has nothing to do with actually travelling, but about writing blogs about your travel! Probably a weird question, but does anyone know of any free or cheap online resources to help me write more creatively? I am a very technical person... I sit down at my computer and try to write about what I saw, and it comes out, "We saw such and such... it was beautiful." I really wish I could describe things with more colorful detail... any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
Reply to this There is an ethical travel site called 'Bradt Travel' - I think they have resources on their site for helping you with travel writing. Also askaboutwriting. net is a good writers' site, I think they also have stuff on the site to help you write.
My own advice (very personal, and my own blogs are much too long and rambly!) is maybe be more anecdotal in your writing - when I was travelling, my friends said what they most enjoyed about my blogs was that they were quite entertaining, as I would write more about things that happened ie on a bus journey, or in a post office - sometimes those things are the things which help people at home get more of a flavour of what you're experiencing. And keep it personal - maybe the so-and-so mountain or fort or palace or ancient site was very beautiful, but maybe that day you were just feeling hot and sweaty because of the monsoon season, and you'd just pushed your way through a crowded market area, or maybe your attention was caught by the lady outside the temple selling flower-garlands, or coconut juice, - put those bits in, they're the bits which make it rich. It's like art - I remember an artist once saying to me, the reason people think they can't draw is because they're not drawing what they're seeing, they're drawing what they THINK they're seeing - so they 'think' mountain and instead of drawing the mountain in front of them, with the different colours of the rock, and the way the shadows are falling on it, they're drawing their own idea of a mountain. Same in a sense with writing - you THINK you're seeing a beautiful pagoda/temple/mountain etc, but what is around it? what's happening outside? inside? what are you feeling? what sounds are around you? is someone there hassling you to 'buy buy buy'? Are you thinking about how you're going to find the bus that takes you back? etc etc.
Anyway, hope that's a bit helpful 😊
Reply to this Thank you for your response... I will check out those sites. I do sometimes add the anecdotal stuff, which I could probably do more of. I have gotten in the habit of carrying a small notebook with me and jotting down those things I would like to remember. But it's not what I'm saying, I'm really trying to improve "how" I say it. If that made any sense at all. I do need to think about all those things you mentioned... what's happening around it, how do I feel about it...
I just found
this page ... this describes exactly what I need to do!
