So, I am on my own for a week or so. TJ has gone back to the US to celebrate her mum´s 60th and probably get a new set of cothes for Costa Rica! I decided to go to Colonia Del Sacramento in Uruguay for a day trip. It´s only one hour by ferry from Buenos Aires, and it was the chance of gettin another stamp on my passport. The weather was superb in Colonia and I have an amazing set of pictures to prove it. The downside of travelling alone is that one has to depend on the kindness of strangers to be in the pictures themselves or become very good at using the self timer function (and hope that noone is going to make a dash for the camera at that point!). I had ... read more

This is a relatively short blog to upload photos so don't panic you don't have to trawl through too much of my speil! I now have four more stamps in my passport!! One for leaving Argentina, one for arriving in Uruguay, one for leaving Uruguay and one for returning to Argentina. In all honesty the hassle caused by immigration was a major one and I am now slightly concerned. Our travel plans are slightly changing at the minute as we have discovered we have a couple of extra weeks in hand so we are planning to spend longer in Patagonia and potentially discover more of southern Chile and the Lake District however this will also mean more border crossings. At the present time I have counted up and between now and when I leave South America ... read more

Carmen - please note another country requiring a pin on the map please :) We took the fast boat (one of two options) of 1 hour to cross from Buenos Aires to Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay. Main reason for my enthusiasm was it was another country and also featured in Mr Brimelow¨s 1001 places to visit guide! The customs process of, out of Arentina and into Uruguay took place on the Argentine side. It was not too bad but did involve further stamps on various pages of my passport - getting a bit concerned I am going to run out of pages for them to stamp! Anyway, boat journey uneventuful with not much to see but dirty water we arrived in Colonia. The tourist information at the harbour closed we wandered into town in the general ... read more

It has been one week since I've been traveling and today I had a couple of milestones other than that one: I got my first sunburn of my trip and for the first time I was asked for directions. It kind of seems as if I have been traveling for longer than one week in some ways but I know time is fickle and it will play tricks on me. Being asked for directions always makes my day becuase it means that I blend in and look at least something like a local rather than a bumbling tourist. Even the sunburn was good, or at least worth it - I lay out all afternoon at the beach and had such a nice time in complete peace and beautiful weather. I then watched one of the most ... read more

Yesterday was the 3 month trip to Uruguay that everyone who travels to Buenos Aires has to take. Upon entering the country you are given a three month visa, and so since most of us from the class arrived at the same time, it was time for us to go. Out trip ended up being Ayla, Julia and me, with Heather and her parents also taking the same boat, Tom, Chris and Hans had to go earlier because they had entered the country about a week earlier than any of us. We left from the terminal at 10 and took the hour long boat trip to Colonia across the Rio Plata. The river, which is pretty close to the ocean is very brown and the morning was cloudy, so the day wasn't looking so good. By ... read more

I got a little scared that you guys were stalking me after my last entry, so decided to put some months between us. Sorry about that. but we do continue. So, from Maldonado, I skidaddled westwards for my final stop in Uruguay - Colonia. I'd heard really mixed reports on this place, with some people saying its a great place to stay for a few days, and others saying come and see the sights, then get out. Being as I had an urgent appointment with La Bombonera in Buenos Aires on Sunday (I arrived in Colonia on Friday) I would be following the advice of the second group. And to be honest, I think it was them, and therefore I, who had it right. Colonia's main "draw" is its historic old city, with people daytripping over ... read more

We arrived in Colonia in no time on the boat. The journey only took an hour by fast boat. We had only just relaxed and settled into our seats and we were getting off again. We were given a glass of champagne for travelling first class. Everyone else seemed to be getting more, so we ended up having a few. Our hostel was easy to find and our first impressions of Colonia was that is was very picturesque. We checked in and went out to find a restaurant that didn’t have steak on the menu! Michelle got a chicken salad and I got chicken and chips. A jug of the house wine was only €1 so we also had to have that too! We noticed as we sat beside the street that the same cars and ... read more

I woke up today not sure where I was going to be staying. It was up to current hotel, if they had a space for tonight I would stay, if not I would catch a bus to Montevideo. I am happy with either possibility, or anything new. Life is wonderfully slow in Colonia and I am the most relaxed I've been on this trip so far. Uruguay is a fascinating country, or at least the one historical town that I visited. Some restaurants have Swiss food, others have Italian, and more have barbequed beef. The local cheese is quite good. Everyone seems mellow and quietly friendly. There is absolutely no pressure on tourists. Most of us walk around the historic town taking photos (that was yesterday). Today I am going for a walk on the beach. ... read more

I made it...one more thing off my bucket list. I took the ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia, Uruguay. The weather is humid, with thundershowers; I think there is a tropical storm passing by. Colonia is a wonderful historic town. Uruguay is a mixture of Switzerland and Bermuda, I think, with a dash of Italian culture mixed in. Cars do not honk!! and they stop for pedestrians! I have met more Canadians here than any other part of South America that I visited. I think Uruguay is laid-back like Canada, with more of a European twist, and tropical weather. Many people are driving on mopeds with no helmuts. The cars are mainly from Europe. The pace of life is gentle. The only complaint so far is the very, very slow computers that do not let you ... read more
