Colonia del Sacramento, in the far west of Uruguay and on the opposite bank of the River Plate from Buenos Aires, is more than just the gateway from Uruguay to Argentina. It has to rank up there as one of the prettiest towns I’ve visited. It’s one of the oldest towns in Uruguay, having been founded by the Portuguese to counter the Spanish growth in Buenos Aires. Consequently it is rich in both history and architecture, having changed constantly from Spanish to Portuguese control. Not much has changed in the historic city in the last century or two, so the whole area within what remains of the city walls retains a historic feeling. The most noticeable building has to be the lighthouse, which is built in the middle of a ruined Franciscan abbey. From the top ... read more

Colonia da Sacramento is quite a contrast to Montevideo. It is polished, classy and expensive. It is a complete and beautifully restored colonial town full of lovely guest houses, shops and restaurants and set against the backdrop of the River Plate. Across the River Plate is Buenos Aires so Colonia fills us with Portenos every weekend, even in the winter. We enjoyed walking around the cobbled streets, visiting the tiny museums, climbing the lighthouse and watching the pretty sunset each night. There were some very quirky restaurants, one we ate in had the owner come out in a different silly hat every ten minutes to entertain the younger guests. Another had some outdoor seating ... in an old car. It was an enjoyable couple of days. ... read more

Uruguay! All I can remember about getting to the ferry port was that it was early. I do remember waking Amanda up and meeting Vikki and Vijay and then I remember being on the ferry and sleeping. Nice ferry though - I had a whole row of seats to myself to stretch out on. Poor Vikki was the only one left awake. A few hours later and we're in Colonia, Uruguay. We hop into a taxi and are taken to the old town. Between the four of us and with the very short distance from the port - the taxi was mega cheap! We arrived at the wall of a very pretty little town. All of the house were either white or grey stone with cobbled streets, old fashioned lampposts and 1950s cars outside. I loved ... read more

From the crisp cool days of Bariloche to the balmy sunshine days of....Uruguay. We travelled to Colona del Sacramento from Buenos Aires by fast ferry over the Rio de la Plata, which according to some is the widest river in the world although isn't considered a river at all by others. And I thought Spanish was confusing. We are staying at another gorgeous little hotel called Hotel la Mision right on the main Plaza of the old town, or Barrio Historico. That makes it sound much grander than it actually is, because the whole town is about the size of a handkerchief, however an extremely quaint and very cute little handkerchief! On our first night Lucy and I went to a gorgeous little restaurant / bar called El Drugstore and I ate the freshest fish ever ... read more

I opted for the overnight bus to get to Uruguay. The Argentineans are renowned for having mastered bus travel and provide a supreme amount of options in terms of companies and classes of seat available. What they neglected divulge was that the air conditioning would blast out arctic-cold air for the entire night reducing the inside of the bus to a giant refrigerator. For everyone else with warm blankets and steaming cups of tea this probably wasn't an issue. For me wearing nothing but shorts, t-shirt and flip flops this resulted in a frozen night sleep. The first rays of sunlight in the morning were very welcome indeed. There is no direct bus to Uruguay and my first destination in the country which was Punta del Este. The bus literally stopped at the side of the ... read more

Geo: -34.4771, -57.8386 Everyone said we'd love Colonia. Everyone. Our slow, meandering bus ride from Frey Bentos took FOREVER, but we finally arrived and walked, dragging suitcases up beautiful bumpy broken tree lined streets, to our hotel. We loved the city immediately. But of course, everywhere we've been we've thought--how clean! how quiet! how lovely! Sounds like we didn't like Montevideo much, doesn't it? We were hot and sweaty by the time we'd had lunch and walked around the historic area, so we spent a good 2 hours in the pool, then back in the pool, then back in the pool again. Even Bob went swimming, so you KNOW it was hot. Our hotel is old, but cool. Kari, the hallways remind me of Chico 'cause they squeak when you walk on them, and they're wavy, ... read more

I can honestly say that I never imagined myself going to Uruguay. Really, the name sounds like it would be a boring place or slightly ugly. Never judge a country based on its name, I can say that for sure! Such a beautiful and tranquil country!!! I went with 2 friends from school, and we stayed 2 nights in a hostel. It is neat because you can get to Uruguay via bus or boat. Clearly the boat is a much better way to travel! We just stayed in a small city and didn´t go to the capital or venture out to much. Colonia is really old and cute. Cobblestone streets and now it is just a place where people from the city go to relax for a weekend. It felt like I was in a movie ... read more

Its the holidays between Xmas and New Year so its not surprising that Iguazu waterfalls are pretty busy, however, they are large enough and spectacular enough to cope with lots of people. On the Brazilian side of the falls you can walk along the edge of the canyon and get spectacular views of the falls that stretch for nearly 3km. Its another case of believing that the views cant get any better then going round the next corner to find that they just have. On the Argentine side there are board-walks that let you get right up close and personal to the falls; in places they go right up to the bottom of the falls or right along the top edge to the point where the water plunges over the edge and disappears into the clouds ... read more
