Day 96 Sunday 15th January We went off to the Feria de Tristan Narvaja markets today which is a huge market in central Montevideo that closes streets for blocks, as we walked up to the area we passed the pet section with stall after stall of fish and tanks, then mice and puppies (it is a pity that the locals do not adopt dogs off the street instead of adding to the problem, I would like to know the statistics of how many of these puppies stay with the buyers all their life?). Next was the fruit and veg section it is huge with an amazing amount and variety, also in this area is fresh pasta, cheeses and salamis. Then there was a sprinkling of clothes including second hand bras – I don’t think ... read more

What a difference a ferry ride makes! Having left the hectic pollution filled streets of buenos aires behind us we boarded the ferry and crossed the rio de la plata, to be greeted by the tranquil cobblestone streets of Colonia de Sacramento. This was another place on our unesco world heritage site list to be crossed off and it didn't disappoint, from the tree lined streets filled with cafes tables and chairs to the old lighthouse this place had all we needed to relax after visiting it's rowdy neighbor. The fact that you could hire a golf buggy to drive round it's historic streets only added to it's appeal. With a top speed of about 15mph Emilie was even let loose to have a go and after a few near ... read more

So after only 1hr on a ferry from Buenos Aires you can arrive in Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay. This small town can boast that it is the oldest town in Uruguay and is renowned for its world heritage site of the historic centre. I had planned to spend two nights over there, which was more than enough time to explore the cobbled streets and take in some sun on the sandy beaches in the bay and rent a bicycle. I had planned to have a couple of chilled out days here before I fly off to South Africa and start a whole new adventure with a few people coming to visit me, Firstly Philippa and then my parents! Can´t wait! But before that on my return to Buenos Aires Izzy and Siobhan were in town, so ... read more

Ushuaia. What to do at the end of the world? Sadly boat trips don't visit the giant waterfall which plunges into space any more as too many tourists were going missing. So we settled for some sea kayaking and a boat trip to some penguins. In case you were wondering, no the Beagle Channel (which flows past Ushuaia) isn't exactly tropical and yes is often pretty unsettled. Despite this, we were assured we'd be fine on the kayaking trip for 'those with experience only'. We chanced on a calm day and had a great experience kayaking round the islands most tourists head round on a big boat - seeing plenty of cormorants, sea lions and holes on an island which were dwellings for the naked native indians. That's not to say it was easy and both ... read more

Day 19/20 - Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay What should we do today? I know lets go to Uruguay! Well let's just say it wasn't quite planned like that but almost. We had actually decided around four or five o'clock the previous day that a trip over the water may not be such a crazy idea after all. We had briefly mentioned the idea back home in the UK, but dismissed the idea out of hand as unrealistic. It was only after talking with Roger and Lynn on one of our numerous coach journeys, who had been to Buenos Aires before and were making the trip themselves on their first free day in the city, that the idea started bubbling in our heads. But for us at that point it was still a bit of a whim. ... read more

Monday 17th October Dirty stop out husband got in at almost 2am this morning. I had him dead in a ditch or disappeared, never to be found again, and me buying a new Audi with the insurance. Oh well :-) Shane says: I left for the Boca jrs game at three. The main game started at half six. Finished at half nine. To the pub for a few beers and pizza. Then back on the bus for a few in Palermo. Great night with a couple from Canada. We travelled in to the city on the subway this morning. It is just like any other city- congested with cars and people, and beautiful old architecture mixed with the modern. While we sitting in one of the squares by a main road, there is an almighty wail, ... read more

Back from Cabo Polonio, it's a quick overnight stop in Montevideo before we head up the norther shore of the Río de la Plata to Colonia del Sacramento. Colonia - whose historic quarter is Uruguay's sole UNESCO World Heritage Site - was founded in the 17th century by the Portuguese. It acted as a port for the smuggling in of imported goods, to the unsurprising irritation of the Spanish, only just across the water in Buenos Aires. After a number of spats the town was eventually ceded to Spain. The historic part of town, located at the very tip of a peninsula sticking out into the river just within view of Buenos Aires, is a lovely place to walk around and soak up the atmosphere. Cobbled streets, palm trees and clapped out vintage cars complement the ... read more

On friday I spent the day in Colonia, Uruguay to renew my visa. I came into Argentina on a tourist visa which lasts 90 days. However, your tourist visa resets if you travel to another country. I've only been here for 6 weeks but will be here for over 100 so I needed to reset my visa sometime during my stay. My program took us to Colonia for the day, but I really wish i could have stayed for the night because I had to take a 3 hour ferry ride to get there and a 3 hour ferry ride back. I think I'm going to return to Uruguay with some friends at the end of the month to hang out and rent a beach house. Even so, how many people can say they went to ... read more

A one hour ferry trip took us to the historic town of Colonia Del Sacramento, founded by the Portuguese in 1680 to smuggle contraband across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aries (which is on the opposite side of the river) into Uruguay. Today it is very much a tourist spot though we were visiting off season and the streets were near deserted on our arrival. Leaving the large terminal we eventually found a hotel on the edge of the old town - it was not a cheap place to stay - and the hotels within the historic area were double the price, despite the season. We only spent two nights in the town though we had planned to stay Saturday evening as well but the hotels prices increased again for the weekend! It was ... read more
