Just returned to Lima after two days in Paracas which is three hours by a luxurious bus south of here on the coast. At first view it appears a ramshackled little town but the resort we stayed in tells another story - fantastic! Paracas is a fishing village which is developing into a tourist/resort centre. So why did we go there? First for a flight over the Nasca Lines - 3000 year old designs created on the mountain plateaus at the base of the Andes Mountains. Why and how there were created remains a matter of conjecture. Two hours flying in a 12 seater plane, banking and steep turning to reveal the various designs such as a monkey, spider, humming bird and fish, and Sue did not even feel sick!!! The late afternoon and evening were ... read more

We started off the day with a little more sight seeing. We were able to squeeze in St. Dominican church and San Fransisco Church. San Francisco is a beautiful church, but the main attraction is the catecombs. They are like everything you could imagine them to be - close enough to touch bones. Over 11000 bodies, but all arranged with similar bones together. Then we walked to Iglesia y Convento Santo Domingo (church and monestary). We were able to clime up the bell tower to get a great view of Lima's center. Grace and I went out to get something to eat before leaving for the bus. When we were waiting for our food we got to experience an earthquake!!! But just a little one. It was still exciting for me. Other than a family in ... read more

As I haven´t been able to get my images loaded for a few days I chose to postpone my blog entry, so I´ll start back in lima and work up to todays activities that match the name of this blog entry. on my last full day in lima I decided to sleep in since I knew we would be on the road a lot after I started my tour the following day. I then decided to take a quick stroll around the neighbourhood to check out the plaza near by. It appears there was a world record trying to be set at the time because there were hundreds of people in the square all playing this instrument called a cajon. (It looks like a large wooden box with a whole in it.) Anyway apparently they did ... read more

Dear Family and Friends, As some of you may know, we are on another Downes family adventure over the holidays to visit Peru. South America was omitted on our 2008 around-the-world trip and we have long desired to visit the Andes and the ancient indiginous lands of this continent. We departed Friday, spent one restful night in Miami and continued on to Lima, arriving without delay on Saturday evening, where we rented a car and drove to our apartment in the section of Lima called San Isidro. Lima is an enormous city of 8 million people (1/3 of the population of Peru) and it was wide awake and hopping even at 10pm at night. Even with GPS, our drive took all our concentration and nerve as the other drivers seem to use their horn in place ... read more

So far our time in Peru had been spent exclusively above the altitude of 2000m, and while we had loved the mountain adventuring our bodies were beginning to crave some warmth. Fortunately this intriguing country is not all mountainous. Far from it in fact. It has sparse deserts that stretch all the way to Chile, lush Amazonian jungle which covers the north east, and of course its elongated pacific coast. We were heading to the Amazon next, but having not seen the sea in two months, since leaving Rio, we decided to make a brief stop in Paracas. This small community is famous for two things, the multitude of birdlife which thrives on the nearby Ballestas Islands, and its consistent stable wind and safe bay which make it a perfect destination for wind sports. The day after we arrived in Paracas we jumped on a boat to go out and see the Islas des Ballestas. On the way out we drove past the peninsula called the Paracas National Reserve, I will mention this later since we actually went out there. But on the coast as we drove by it in our boat we got a chance to see a glyph, kind of like the Nazca lines. The local Peruvians think of it as being a cactus since that is a big part of their culture and native religion, the Europeans sailors who came through thought of it as being a candelabra that guided their way to land. Either way it was pretty spectacular, also since it was carved into rock whereas the Nazca lines are just rocks arranged on the ... read more

... read more

Druhou atrakciou vdaka ktorej je Pisco zname je blizka narodna rezervacia Paracas a to sme si samozrejme nemohli nechat ujst. Vacsinu rezervacie tvori pust a krasne opustene plaze kde zije vela vtakov, medzi najvzacnejsie patri chilsky plameniak.

From Lima we took the local bus, Flores, four hours south to Pisco. Pisco was hit hard by the earthquake in 2007 and there is still so much damage here. There was massive amounts of construction underway. That, along with the political rally in the main square (right next to our hostel) was a bit overwhelming. Luckily we were exhausted and the very loud street noise didn't keep us up. Street noise aside, our hostel, Tambo Colorado, was quite pleasant. For under $11 we got a private double room with our own shower. We woke up at 6:30 the next morning to eat breakfast and head off to Paracas to tour the Islas Ballestas. It was a two hour boat tour to the "poor mans galapagos." We saw loads of pelicans, boobies, penguins, and sea lions. ... read more
