Paracas Bus trip was pleasant and comfortable and we arrived more or less on time and found our transfer waiting. Hostel Los Frayles (20 USD double with private bathroom, incl b/fast) was new, clean and pleasant with a nice Cafe downstairs. Up early and ready for our boat trip. Many stalls being set up on a waterfront promenade. Would have been nice to eat here the previous night. A number of the stalls were selling fossils and a couple seemed to have minerals for sale. What was amazing was the number of people who arrived for the trip - many by bus from (presumably) Ica and Nasco. There was a bit of a delay in leaving due to the fog but we were soon away in 30 person speedboats (x4). We passed the saltworks and then ... read more

Paracus and Pisco - 23rd to 25th of Feb. After an uneventful five hour journey down the Panamerican towards Pisco, we were swiftly deposited by the side of the road. Oh when you said the bus went to Pisco, you meant it dropped us at the side of the road 6km away from the town? I understand. Luckily, there were numerous taxi drivers more than willing to bring us to Pisco so we hopped in a taxi. On the way to Pisco, the taxi man said that tourists don't usually stay in Pisco anymore, rather they go to another town called Paracus instead. Pisco was levelled by an earthquake in 2007 and they are rebuilding the town currently, whereas Paracus was barely affected. Where to stay - in the rubble or the beach town? We decided ... read more

This morning we had the absolute WORST hotel breakfast EVER at the Las Dunas Resort in Ica. I think it's the first time I've ever opted for tea over coffee because the coffee was just THAT bad. Blech. Our pickup was at 6:45am and at 7:15am we were still sitting on the bus waiting for two people who never showed because they had overslept. Ah, the joys of traveling in a big group! Fortunately we still made it in time for our 8am boat departure to Ballestas Islands. Our guide warned us that the boats are not covered and that the large amount of birds hovering usually leads to people getting "luck" dropped on them from the sky. Thank goodness I was not lucky this day, and neither was anyone else on our boat! We stopped ... read more

Oh dear, and the grammar is bad! At least people are having a laugh thanks to our broken Spanish. Well. alot has happended in 10 days or so... We have just spent 3 lush days in Lima (Dubbed as the Captial of Kings but it should be renamed the captail of Casinos). Suprisingly nice. Everyone we meet said Lima is a shitehole get out asap, thats enough to make me stay. Our hotel is in a uber posh area called Mirafoles, very chilled sea side spot. Lima has (and still going) gone through much regeneation in the last few years. Went to an exhibition of before and after shots. Roads, parks, poor areas and the centre have been given a make over and its very impressive. The ... read more

The Nasca lines deden we per vliegtuigje.5 personen kunnen erin.

Blogger Bec Day 2 of our trip saw us visit the amazing Ballestas Islands, off the coast of Paracas, about 4 hours south of Lima. (Normally, tourists stay in Pisco, a major town, but due to the major earthquake there late last year, it was not possible. Pisco is still being rebuilt, a very slow process, but one helped immeasureably by NGO´s and the local government.) After an early start, we walked about 1km to the boat dock where once suitably life jacketed up alongside about 25 other cameraweilding tourists, we set off in a speed boat. About 10 minutes into the journey bought us to a mysterious candelabra inscription on the side of a hill. At a guess I´d say that the inscription would be about 100m in height and maybe 50m in width, ... read more

Just realised I totally forgot about our time here whn I blogged yesterday, so apologies for any confusion... On the way to Lima, we stopped off in Paracas National Park, after driving through the areas that had been worst hit by the earthquake a couple of months back. It was quite bizarre, whole towns have been flattened and people are still living in Red Cross tents 2 months on. Paracas itself had also been hit, though not as bad as Pisco and Ica. Whilst in the park we took a boat ride to a set of islands known as the poor man's Galapagos. It was OK, though I'm hoping the real thing is better. We saw a fair amount of stuff though; Seals (the aquatic creatures, not the soul singer), Penguins (the flightless birds, not the ... read more

Paracas might just be one of my favorite towns in Peru so far. It is extreamly small, the entire town in settled along the water front along a board walk. Unfortunatly it is also very touristy so gringos appear in every direction and the resaurants tend to cater to more american appetites. After a wonderful dinner sunday night on the boardwalk we settled into our hostal for bed. Yes, the pillow was lumpy but the bed was fine and I got a good nights sleep for the first time on the trip. We awoke early in the morning and headed next door for yet another breakfast of rolls and instant coffee. From breakfast we loaded in to the van for the short drive to the docks where we boarded our little boat to tour the ... read more

Pisco. there is very little that one can really say about pisco. for those of you that have been fortunate enough to have experienced the joys of a little town in Cambodia called Battambang, then some vivid images should come to mind instantly. probably the infamous words of the Badman "we're on the first bus outta here" also come to mind quickly. then again, we were in Pisco for a reason. not pisco sours as one might think ... we would have to wait until the ICA provence for that. it was an island where sea going birds like to flock. the name, Islas Ballestas, or popularly refered to by guidebooks as "the poor man's Galapagos"! and flock there they do. they flock there in such numbers that the island literally is 50 metres deep in ... read more
