We had heard that Paracus is a must see when you are in this area so since its only an hour away from Ica we decided to take a taxi there, what the hell, The somewhat barren desert landscape continues but there is respite from the heat as the breeze picks up nearer the coast, What's fascinating about the area we were driving through has flat plains on which there are perfectly square plots of various crops, green and lush surrounded by unforgiving desert, Dill, Asparagus,Paprica and of course potatoes, When it does rain which is seldom the farmers collect it in man made reservoirs and use it to irrigate their crops, there is also access to underground water. We arrived in Paracus village to yet another festival ( I swear we are not seeking them ... read more

To get to Paracas I got a bus from Lima and arrived early evening. I stayed in the tiny little village overnight and spent the evening playing with kids who seemed to live at the hostel. I think that rather than paying for a room I should have been paid for babysitting as their parents dissapeared! But it was really good actually as they taught me lots of Spanish, including my numbers (the shame of being taught your numbers by a 4 year old who clearly thinks you are really thick!) which is useful for bartering in shops! They also taught me lots of games they play in school which will come in useful when I get to the orphanage. I was up late as there town has an election on Sunday and the main candidate ... read more

Happy Sunday. One thing I always find hard to remember when traveling is what day of the week it is. But today is Sunday, and that was probably why there was not that much traffic on the Pan-American Highway. Dinner last night was a set menu, appetizer was called la causa, which if you know Spanish means the cause. It is called that because it was an easy dish to serve to the soldiers during the Peru/Chile war. It´s a layer of chicken between two layers of mashed potato. It was pretty good. The main course was similar to teriyaki. It was beef or chicken with onions and peppers in a soy based sauce with rice and oddly (to me) french fries. It´s strange to me to have both carbohydrates at a meal, but apparently, while ... read more

Only 3 hours South of Lima on the Panamerican Highway we were to arrive in Paracas. The Highway was again through the dusty desert, this time near the coast with many desolate beaches where the desert meets the sea. Paracas is only a newly built town (although like most Peruvian towns it may not look new) after an earthquake and tsunami in 2007 destroyed the town. We are here to see the Ballestas Islands or poor mans Galapagos as they are also known. We know we are now well and truly on the tourist path, there are many, many camera toting middle aged continental Europeans in this town! We were off early the next morning out to see the islands. The trip was surprisingly very good. You pass El Candelabro first, a sort of cactus shaped ... read more

Hello I cannot seem to get my pictures to download lately and until I figure what is wrong, no pictures. We left for our tour to the Ballestas Islands at 8 am. It began at the beach where loads of people were waiting for the same tour and we had time to kill before the boats arrived for us. The tour operators had big bags of fish that they were feeding the pelicans and we were able to get some fantastic photos with hoards of pelicans. It was really great but Macayla was scared, she would not get near them. We then left for the tour and were able to see penquins, sea lions and various other bird life. Plus, we were able to see the famous three-pronged Candelabra, a giant figure etched in the side ... read more

Before leaving Huacachina this morning, Macayla and I chose to try and climb a sand dune and walk the top. We made it up to the top and were able to take some great pictures of Huacachina down below. Very beautiful. Huacachina was originally built for the Peruvian elite as a vacation location and now it is more of a backpacker hang-out. Drove into Ica to catch a bus to Pisco and had to kill some time before the bus left. We went to the Plaza de Armas for some lunch and in the plaza they were having a mass wedding. It was pretty cool to witness. So many women dressed in white getting married one after the other. Macayla and I found it interesting and strange all at the same time. With the language barrier, ... read more

Geo: -13.8667, -76.2667Brady and Jose picked us up early to head for the Paracas peninsula which was about an hour north of Ica. When we got there we were able to take a boat out to see the Ballestas Islands. The boat did not stop at any of the islands, since they do not allow humans to land there usually. The islands are inhabited by lots of wildlife. We saw pelicans, sea lions, Humboldt penguins, boobies (the gray-footed ones), starfish, sand dollars, sea urchins, and lots more, especially lots of sea birds. Brady went along on the boat ride and did a great job of pointing out all the different creatures. He even found a spider crab on one of the cliffs, which seemed to be an unusual sighting. We also saw the Candelabra from the ... read more
