first day in Cusco.......... Wandered around the Plaza de Armas, very pretty and all very well maintained - a pleasant change from Bolivia, though a little touristy. Decided to take it easy and save the sightseeing 'til Rob arrived the next day. Settled into an afternoon of scrabble and papaya smoothies in a little bar called 'Los Perros', complete with its own little puppy. second day in Cusco............. Fetched Rob from the airport, took him for a hearty brekkie, took in a few remains of Inca stonework around the centre of Cusco then decided to take it easy and save the sightseeing 'til Rob was over his jet-lag. Back to the scrabble bar (jels is not a word, and that's all we'll say on that matter) where Rob treated the poor budget travellers to a bottle ... read more

Ok, 2 entries in one day, we´re doing well! We left off on the way to Cusco, due to our expensive time in Huacachina we decided to slum it in Cusco and so found a ridiculously cheap hostel. This means pretty much no heating or hot water and dirty. Anyway, we survived it long enough to book our trek to Macchu Pichu. We booked a 4 day Lares trek which was basically a 26 mile trek over 3 days, then spending day 4 at MP. The trek itself was pretty tough in places, hiking for up to 6 hours a day and climbing to 4,500m. We had a good gang of people though I seemed to be the most unfit, I guess 6 years sitting at a desk 10 hours a day wasn´t the best training, ... read more

Here we are in Cuzco, the only ... read more

Well, Ted and I just spent our second day in Peru. We went out to a bar last night - Norton´s Rat. It was fun. We hung out with a local and I drank some Pisco. Pisco is like whiskey. It was disgusting. It must be pretty strong because you can´t take it out of the country. We had an avocado y cheese sandwich. good food here! it is sort of expensive. went to the market today and bought some pantalones and alpaca hats. the pants make me look like a clown, but they are comfy. the market was kinda gross. dead pigs and chicken everywhere. stinky too. we are not good bargainers, but i did get my clown pants for six bucks. going to the sacred valley tomorrow to see some inca ruins. should be ... read more

The day after the party, I ended up staying up all night packing for the trip. We then took a 5 hour flight to Miami and then a 7 hour flight to Lima. We spent the night in Lima and caught a 5 am flight to Cusco, which took 2 hours and was scary because the visibility was so bad that the pilot had to make several attempts at landing. Cusco a city nearly 11,000 ft above sea level in the middle of the Andes Mountains and is the closest large city to Machu Picchu and was considered the capital of the Inca Empire until the Spanish conquistadors took over and replaced most of the Inca temples with churches (jerks!). There are some impressive churches that date back to the mid 1500s but the real impressive ... read more

Cusco, Peru was the center of the Inca Empire. The Spanish destroyed much of the city in the 16th century. The churches seen here in the Plaza de Armas were partially built with stone from the rubble of demolished Inca structures. Insult to injury. This is also the launching pad for Machu Picchu. Needless to say, it is overrun with tourists.... read more

Kate - Our next stop was Cuzco a city in southeastern Peru near the Urubamba valley of the Andes mountain range. It is a gorgeous city surrounded by beautiful mountains and picturesque architecture. The journey from Ica was a long 16 hours but was actually not too bad. We did the over night journey and by the time we had watched a couple of rubbish films on the bus and slept for about 8 hours we had almost arrived. Cuzco really is a beautiful city and we decided to get there a good 3 days before we stared the Inca Trail as the city lies 3380 meters above sea level so you need to have time to acclimatize so that you don´t get hit by any altitude sickness. As soon as we hit the city i ... read more

Ahh, what a road it's been for my poor travel companion Grant. Day 1 in Lima he started losing stuff and ever since then it's been all downhill. He got pretty disgustingly ill (it really was gross) not long after that, which went on strong for about 5 days. That was in Arequipa in what he dubbed "Arequipan Hell". We were so excited to leave Arequipa and head to Cuzco and our luck was looking up when we boarded our bus. Leather seats that reclined almost into bed position (semi-cama) and onboard food and service for half the price of the leading bus company. The company name is CIAL, a name we wouldn't soon forget. Grant and I even gayly high-fived as we were leaving...... 2:00 am: I wake up tired and cold. I look around ... read more
