The bus journey from Arequipa to Cuzco doubled back on much of that we had travelled through getting to Arequipa from Puno so we did it in one 10 hour stint overnight. Amazingly the bus got in an hour early - at 5am, so after ignoring the accommodation touts (if you didn´t like the place they took you to what are you going to do at 5am in the morning when its dark and you´re in a strange city) we hung out in the station with a mass of locals until it got light. We then caught a taxi to the place that Adam stayed 2 years ago as it's in a great location. They had a free room at a fair price so we checked in, and it wasn´t even 7am! 10 minutes later we ... read more

I rolled out of bed this morning about 11am. I was feeling surprisingly Ok, luckily last night I had stuck to the same drink most of the night and at the end I was drinking water! We decided to get some fresh air so went for a walk around the main square and headed to a cafe for some much needed breakfast and coffee. We needed to be more awake as we had booked to go horse riding round some Incan ruins in the afternoon. The guide for the afternoon picked us up and we headed to some ruins know as SaqsayWaman which sounds like sexy woman when you say it! Me, Ann and Sarah weren´t feeling very cultural after last night and we were struggling to pay attention to the guide. We decided to take ... read more

Hey everyone, Sorry- it looks like the pictures that I tried to upload last time didn't work. I'm going to reupload them this time. So, I was offered a great job through the institute in Costa Rica! I am going to be the Academic Coordinator for the San Jose Maximo Nivel. The pay is significantly higher than a teacher (still crap for the US... but i'll be able to live pretty well there.) I'm so excited about it because not only will I be able to do administrative work with a decent title and resume builder, but I will be teaching 3-4 classes as well. The hours are pretty intense.. but I think it will all be worth it. I bought a plane ticket and they funded $250 of my flight which was pretty helpful due ... read more

Jen; having been thouroughly gringoed and fed trout to my eye balls we were ready to leave the tourist hot spot that is copacabana!! Not that i didnt like it. Its just that it doesnt really feel like much of a travelling experience when youre surrounded by english and american backpackers! We expected 5 fairly tough days riding to get to cusco the next tourist hotspot, and the first day was nearly 60 miles from Copacabana to Ilave, a town where we thought there would be some kind of accomodation. It was only 10 miles to the peruvian border from copa and it was a totally fuss free border crossing; collected a couple more stamps for the passport and away we were!! Into the final country on our South American tour. Hard to know what to ... read more

We left Puno early and headed to Cusco, all hoping that the strike was over and we didn´t get stopped just outside the city. Apparently during the strikes people block off all the roads with big stones and boulders and if any cars come along they start throwing rocks at them...hence all the worrying when we left! Luckily when we got nearer to Cusco the stones had been removed enough to allow vehicles through but we still had to swerve to avoid a few piles! When we arrived we just had a wander round the main square and headed to a little craft market where we tried our skills at bartering, they worked but we could have done better! In the evening we headed to a cool bar where drinks were served in plant pot type ... read more

Our trip started on Monday, June 7th, as we flew through Atlanta, overnight to Lima, and directly to Cuzco, Peru the following morning. I got off to quite a messy start, having become completely sweat-soaked carrying my backpack from my house to the airport in humid weather and also spilling two-thirds of my ginger ale on my cargo pants on the flight. Nice. Compared to the relative quiet of the Lima airport, our arrival at Cuzco airport was like being flung into a carnival. As soon as we entered the arrival area, a melee of pan flute music, tour guides, and hotel hosts swallowed us whole. We also noticed how thin the air was - I was already winded from putting on my pack. Our hostel, Casa de la Gringa, was located in the San Blas ... read more

I spent the past weekend taking advantage of how close I am to so many Incan ruins and playing the tourist role. My roommate, Alex, and I traveled around Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Saturday we went to the market here in Cusco which was quite an experience. The market is enormous and there are hundreds of people from the 'campesino' (the sorrounding rural areas--farmers and such) selling fruits, vegetables, maize, beans, and fresh meat, amongst other things. We definitely turned a lot of heads as we were probably the only non-Peruvians there! On Saturday afternoon we took the City Tour with a guide around Cusco...we went to Incan museums and ruins, and Catholic Cathedrals. The Cathedral here in Cusco (you can see a picture in my last entry) is pretty incredible. There are a dozen ... read more

Our bus ride from Nazca to Cuzco was officially our worst yet.. by a really long way! We hadn´t been able to book the Cama seats for the 16 hour ride so had to make do with semi-cama... oh the hardship! We got on the bus at 12.00am in darkness with everyone else asleep so had and had to try to make ourselves as comfortable as possible in the dark but this was not the worst part! Dale had seen the road that we were going to go along from the top of Cerro Blacno but had decided that it was in Sophie´s best interest that he did not let her know what he had seen. After about 10 minutes into the ride we were on this road and Sophie being in the window seat soon ... read more

We are in Cusco, which the Incas referred to as the ´umbilicus´ of the world. We arrived about a week ago via bus from Puno. It was a nice bus ride and we stopped along the way at various Inca Ruins and a church in Andahuayllias. We were excited when we got to Cusco because it is such a cute town and has a beautiful Plaza. There are many churches built atop Inca Temples. Lots of stonework is left from Inca times. It is very sturdy and has survived earthquakes. We will be here in Cusco for 4 weeks, living with a host family. We met them a day after we got here and were lucky be placed with a really nice host family. Our 'mom' Nancy, is a retired teacher. She has four kids. Her ... read more

Hey everyone! Sorry for not writing in a while. things have just been really crazy here.. but a good kind of crazy! My first week of classes went really well... my teacher is a really funny guy. Very relatable. There is a lot of work actually. I will be doing my first mini lesson tomorrow morning. It's only about 20 minutes long but it's sort of nerve racking because it's really going to be the first time that I will actually have to teach the students something. My lesson is on meals of the day in the United States. What they have for meals in Peru is pretty different. They have like a piece of bread and some juice, maybe some fruit, for breakfast and then lunch is their huge meal. It's basically like our dinner. ... read more
