What was initially supposed to be a week long stay in the ´Navel of the World´ actually turned out to be a fleeting visit, due to Jake´s altitude sickness. When we arrived in Cusco two days before the start of the Inca Trail, and spent a day browsing the many market stalls to find the perfect alpaca jumpers and seeing the twinkling lights of the city tower above the Plaza de Armas at night we mutually decided that we loved the place. The streets that lead off from the Plaza are peppered with buildings boasting classic Incan masonry. The granite bricks are carved in perfect alignment to each other; so much so that we are told that the centurys newer colonial Spanish buildings all fell in earthquakes leaving just the Incan foundations remaining as inch perfect ... read more

... So, the day began early! Early!! Flying into Cuzco was amazingly beautiful. Again we flew through the snow topped Andes, in our small little plane. All of a sudden after turning around a mountain, we were blessed with the sight of Cuzco, and what a sight it is, please refer to photos. We arrived and the altitude hit us almost immediately. After stepping off the plane we felt light headed and floaty...and the Peruvian band greeting us, added to this hallucinatory feeling. This lasted for about 1/2 an hour, progressing then on to a bit of nausea, general tiredness and shortness of breath. We then met our second guide, Gonzalo, or better known as ¨Speedy¨. We then arrived at our charming hotel, what a gem! We have also arrived at the start of the ¨Inti ... read more

so, started 2day early with a trip back to the airport. the hostal i stayed at in lima was fantastic and arranged for my transport getting me a good deal on the taxi. i had booked a room in a girls dorm with shared back but i was the only person in that dorm so i had the place all to myself. met a couple other girls from canada that were having traveling woes. all in all, the transport, accomodation and breakfast cost me less than 20 dollars. no too shabby. this am, i had a bit of a scare, hence the title of this entry. tried to use my atm at a machine in the airport and it said that my bank didn´t recognize my number. what does that mean! yikes! stayed calm and didn´t ... read more

We travelled on to our next stop, Cusco, by bus, passing some great scenery along the way. As we reached the highest pass, there were snow capped mountains and the inevitable market stalls selling all sorts of llama and alpaca clothes that you can find everywhere in Peru! After the pass, we headed down through the scenic valley, passing little villages and towns... a taster perhaps of things to come on the Inca Trail! When we arrived into Cusco, the city was really busy. We stayed near the main square, Plaza de Armas and the road outside was full of children dressed in colourful local dress. After we checked in, we watched as hundreds of children danced down the road outside of our hotel to Peruvian music, heading into the main square. Apparently there are always ... read more

It was cold. I needed something to keep my noggin warm. I heard that alpaca was one of the finest wools in the world. “…es alpaca.” She said. “Cuando es?” “Treinta soleis.” She replied. I took the hat and held it up to the sun like I knew what I was doing, squint my eyes as if to scrutinize the fibers. “No. Es synthetico.” I said jokingly. “Es alpaca.” She replied firmly. I put my nose to the hat and breathed in. I had saw someone else do the same several days ago. Monkey see, monkey do, right? “Eh... Es alpaca con synthetico. Veinte Soleis.” I offered. She nodded, so I paid her and walked out with a new hat. To this day I have no idea what my cap is made of. ….. “So, do ... read more

Cusco is a gorgeous city with narrow cobbled streets, a stunning main square, endless parades and festivals, great food etc etc.... But of course the main thing is Machu Picchu so after speaking to a few agencies we settled on the 5 day/4 night Salkantay trek - apparently harder than the 4 day/3night Inca trail. So last Monday we were picked up at 5am and driven 2 hours to Mollepata at 2800m, the start of our trek. We were with a great group of people - Magnus from Norway, John, Holly and Chris from the US, Abraham from Mexico, Astrid and Tim from Germany, Helene from France, Alexa from Switzerland and Nir from Israel and of course our local guide, Percy, and we had so much fun together. After Ruth had bought some sticks and the ... read more

The Inca Capital Cusco was the Inca Capital for over hundred years and a lot of history can be found in this city. The historical centre is beautiful with cobblestone streets, remains of Inca walls, churches and chatedrals. I visited the Inca museum after been to Machu Picchu. It was a interesting tour worth doing if you are here. You can easily spend a few days in Cusco without really doing anything special. Just soak in the atmosphere, eat some local food in the market or drink a coffe on one of Plaza de Armas many balconies. It's a great city to visit! "Sexy Woman" Or Saqsaywanàn which is the real name, is situated on a hilltop above Cusco. David, Ruth and I walked up to have a look on saturday. The ruins had both military ... read more
