I THINK I AM AN EX-PAT I don´t know how it happened, but I think I became an Ex-Pat today. Mom Ex-Pat means ex-patriot, it is not someone who has disowned their country but rather someone who lives outside their country. Well, I guess I have to live outside the US if I want my medical insurance to cover me. I changed my insurance policy to cover me for only 6 months per year in the USA (maybe that makes me half an Ex-Pat?) I figured I have been traveling outside the US for more than 6 months the last 4 years and I will save $1000 a year. Now I have to travel!!! If I would have changed it 4 years ago I would have saved enough money to visit Australia, New Zealand, Thailand ... ... read more

Et me voilà à Huaraz.

We´re in the mountains in a smallish town called Huaraz. We´ve just done a 3 day hike in the Andes (Huayhuash range). We started our trip off by waking up at 5:25am, 5 minutes before our bus was leaving! We managed to pack up our stuff quickly and charged through the streets of Huaraz to the bus terminal... lucky a taxi came along because we were already exhausted after running 4 blocks at such a high altitude. Lucky for us our bus hadn´t left on time and our French hiking companion was glad to see us step on to the bus. The bus ride to our starting point (Llamac a very remote village) was like a bus ride to hell... it was beneficial to close your eyes and sleep as much as possible. This bus drove ... read more

We arrived back yesterday from our 5 day trek in the Cordillera Blanca. We went on a route called The Santa Cruz Loop which is pretty popular with tourists here. We set off on Day 1 in a private minibus with the 6 other people who were going on the trek with us and 4 other who were doing a one day walk up to Lake 69 which was the first attraction on the itinerary. After a flat tyre and an unscheduled stop we arrived at the drop off point for the walk. It became clear pretty soon that we were the slowest of our group and being naive to such things Mike and I became convinced that we would be unable to complete the trek as we were supposed to walk together. Turns out that ... read more

We decided that a warm up walk for the 5 day trek later in the week was in order so we set off to try and catch a bus to Punta Callan which is approx. 4,200mt high and is a recommended walk back into Huaraz. After spending an hour trying to find a bus to take us there and being told the bus the guidebook suggests doesn´t exist we decided to take a taxi to the pass. This was not before trying get a collectivo (like a minibus) which was preparing to transport about 10 people, 6 sheep and a net full of Guinea Pigs. An hour later, through some fo the windiest roads ever made, we were pretty glad we had decided to take a taxi rather than a bus. We got out at the ... read more

We love it here! We arrived on Wednesday morning at 5 am after another excellent Peruvian bus journey. The buses here are so unbelievably superior to the Ecuadorian ones (can´t believe my life is such I get so excited by buses!). Anyway, 5 am and we´re thinking nothing would be open, amazingly all the hostels were up and about waiting for the latest influx. We managed to get a room in Hostel Churup which had been recommended to us previously. Its lovely and very very reasonable (Mike is convinced they´ve made a mistake *see end). After sleeping for few hours we ventured out to see what the city has to offer. The first most striking thing was the huge snowcapped peaks surrounding us. As you can see from the picture (which really doesn´t do it justice) ... read more
