i know this blog is really out of date but i{ll do my best to catch up! so, we actually walked into paraguay across the friendship bridge from brazil into paraguay, you{d imagine it was a little rope bridge across a jungle or something (or maybe thats just me being silly¿¿), anyway it wasn{t and the border town, ciudad del este didnt look all that enticing. so we trekked across the bridge with our excessively large backpack in about 40degrees of midday heat and arrived on the other side at the customs office v.v.v.sweaty! i handed over my passport first and the guy looked quite confused (by a british passport¿¿) and had to take the suspicious looking pport to his boss and for a moment i did think i wasnt going to be allowed in!anyway, after ... read more

day 9...my credit card has still not arrived... i am begining to feel like i am stuck in an episode of survivor living off dodgey hostel food. anyways...the most corrupt city in South America... i have not seen too much corruption in south america although i would have to agree that this place must have it´s fair share. i decided to get out and do a bit more travel and not let the hinderance of having no accessable funds get me down. As with all australians, canadians and USA-íans we need a visa to enter paraguay...this visa cost 40 dollars US and for 1 day i hardly thought it was worth it. travelling with another fellow from the USA we set off for the contraband capital of south america Ciudad del Este! as my fellow traveller ... read more

Sieltä löytyi myös soittimia, vahvareita, tölsyjä, kalastusvälineitä, autojen Tuning-välineitä, sähkö-leluja j... read more

South America » Paraguay » Encarnacion December 25th 2006

I mentioned in an earlier entry that I loved the people of Paraguay and now I have perfect proof to show how wonderful they are. Saturday, when I arrived in Encarnacion, ready to see the missions, I spent a couple hours taking care of minor errands in the cute downtown, whose commercial center consists mainly of two streets. Along one street, I came across a travel agency. Though I'd already decided to do the Jesuit ruins on my own, I peeked in to check on some details. Somehow, the directions I had gotten before - just get off the bus at the cross between Trinidad and the highway, then walk 300 meters - seemed a little vague. The ones for Jesus, a mission site that I didn't get to visit, were even less clear - get ... read more

A break from the pouring rain was all I wanted for Christmas...And today I was granted a few hours of sunshine with puffy clouds and blue skies, the best backdrop for the immense ruins that stretch over a hilltop in Trinidad, Paraguay. Even as the storm clouds came rolling back in, they served to just increase the dramatic nature of the scene, and leave me enough time to wave down a bus from the road, to head back to Encarnacion. The day started strangely, as any day would when you arrive in a new city at 6 AM, its residents still asleep and you ready to get going. After the night's bus ride, I quickly checked into a hotel across from the bus terminal (waking the owner), took a shower, and had a short nap. After ... read more

...than I gave it. Looking back at what I wrote and the pictures I posted yesterday, I see that I---unintentionally---painted a very bleak picture of Paraguay. I didn't realize it yesterday but, really, I think it was just that a) I didn't have many pictures, due to the rain, and the ones I had negatively depict the country 2) the rainy day gave me the blues and c) I didn't have time to really say anything. Today, on the other hand, was a gorgeous day, with enormous puffy clouds against a blue sky, and now I'm sitting in the Asuncion bus terminal for the next 6 hours....so time is all I have! Here we go, giving Paraguay the credit it's due! My conclusion so far, before I start, is that I love Paraguay. The people are ... read more

Over the past couple months, almost everyone I told about my upcoming trip to Paraguay responded with the same brand of look, one of those tilt your head to the side, purse your lips funny and lift your eyebrows looks that hints towards something on a scale between 'Whyyyy?' and 'Are you crazy?' and I took it as more encouragement for this adventure. If there's something so weird about Paraguay, then it must be worth going. But the part that some people mentioned with a stronger, wrinkle the nose look, was the weather, the HEAT, that is. It's summertime here and just days ago, right before I arrived, it was supposedly 48 degrees Celsius, which calculates to roughly 118 degrees Fahrenheit. Unreal. I always say I love the heat anyway, but of course that kind of ... read more

Have now found our first luxurious campsite! Having spent most of the past month camping with very basic facilities it is sheer bliss to be staying in Trinidad with power showers and a pool. It is so hot and sticky here that we only need cold showers and the pool is just marvellous. Have had to have my stookie removed so I can get cool! Now have a removable substitute so I can shower and go in the water. It´s very strange to think that just a week ago we were wearing thermals and sleeping with hats and gloves! Even at night the temperature here doesn´t drop below 30C so it´s very hard to sleep. The chorus from the insects around our camp never stops and in the evening it seems they all fight to see ... read more

Being clever so-and-sos we saved the best for last at the Iguazu Falls. This morning we caught the first bus to the park and we headed towards something called the Devil’s Throat. A mini-train transports all the tourists to the beginning of the walkway, and they obviously knew we were coming as they were playing Gabriel’s Oboe from the film The Mission - more famously it was also the music Gemma walked down the aisle to. We had a brief chat with a young English chap with a fondness for traveller clichés. When we said that we had heard of Eailing, London, his hometown, he slowly shook his head and said “small world”! There is a 1100m ‘catwalk’ to the viewing deck about as close to the Devils Throat as any sensible person would want to ... read more

We have been over the border into Paraguay for some tax free shopping. Not quite as exciting as it sounds as those who needed visas wimped out and didn´t join us! They needn´t have worried, as border control was rather slack. I´m please to say we did do something illegal though, as Darren smuggled his cigarettes over and back into Brazil. Anyway, the shopping turned out to be a bit disappointing because it was mainly electrical goods, so we ended up buying some suncream! There were lots of street stalls, and we kept having socks thrusted in our faces! Not sure why there were so many socks, as it was so hot everyone was in flip flops anyway. After Paraguay we had to get a night bus to Sao Paolo, which actually took 17 hours. We ... read more
