Hi! I actually got a computer today during our short school break, so I get to update all of you. This week, we have classes for 4 hours a day (all in Spanish) and up to 3 hours of homework a night. Can you believe it, my students? Yestday I had a test, and I have one again on Monday. Then next week we have 2 oral final exams and 2 written final exams. I have been able to have entire conversations with locals--ordering food, buying things, explaining things to the doctor, etc., which is incredibly exciting! This past Sunday, when we saw the Jesuit ruins at Jesus y Trinidad, I had one of the most surreal and spiitual experiences of my life. I can not wait to put pictures on here, though I know that ... read more

A bridge is all that separates the cities of Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil and Ciudad del Este in Paraguay. Getting stamped out of Brazil we walked with our packs across the bridge which was busy with traffic and people. The arched bridge is 500 meters or so across and we had a fantastic view of the river below covered in morning mist. On the other side we were presented with a grubby, dodgy looking Ciudad del Este. Quite a contrast from the controlled and relaxed and safe city we had just come from across the river. It was known for its smuggling and black market. With no desire to hang around we got a pretty stamp in our passports from the immigration man and grabbed a taxi. The ride was overpriced and the driver tried ... read more

After a month of hard graft at Iguazu Falls, I took early retirement and escaped across the border into Paraguay. Iguazu Falls and the rivers that feed her are on a triple frontier splitting Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. By entering Paraguay it also meant I had completed the gringo bingo full house of Latin American countries. (Again, in my book Suriname is not truly Latino, being a former Dutch colony and all, so no letters of pedancy please). I quickly conceived a route that would take me into the Pantanal of Brazil, through the major cities of Paraguay. Major cities in Paraguay are like minor towns in the rest of South America. The majorest city of Paraguay is Asuncion, the capital. This was my first stop. Paraguay is the whipping boy of South America - although ... read more

Downtown Asuncion is a fairly miraculous place. It is the capital city of the country, and the one major, major city of the country. Thus, it has the elements of being both the cultural capital (like a New York or San Francisco) and the political capitol (like Washington D.C.). Walking downtown, this is what I saw on one corner: on one side, one of the hippest eateries in Paraguay, the Lido Bar. They serve delicious empanadas and other local specialities. On the other side of the street is the Panteon de los Heroes, which is the Hall of the Heroes--kind of like the Arlington Cemetary, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument rolled in one. There are many ceremonial caskets of leaders and generals along with many statues, plaques, and a shrine. Armed soldiers standd outside at attention, 24 ... read more

The latest stage of our travels took us off the gringo trail into the less explored country of Paraguay. For some inexplicable reason backpackers don't seem to have a very high opinion of Paraguay as demonstrated the night before we left Brazil. We'd just returned from the Pantenal and were relaxing in Campo Grande with 2 others from our trip. Another traveller started chatting to us. We did the usual 'where are you from, where have you been, where are you heading' conversation that typifies all conversations between backpackers. When we said we were heading to Paraguay a look of puzzlement passed over his face as he said - 'why are you going to Paraguay, there's nothing to do there?'. When we asked him whether he'd visited he hadn't, so we asked him how he ... read more

So the cargo boat left Asuncion at 7am on Wednesday...apparently. We boarded at 6.15 (so we could get a good spot amongst the chickens. Around us we watched 11892 eggs (I counted), 1600 tomatoes, 3 beds, a moped and a sofa. Amongst the odds and ends arriving on board, 2 scraggly travellers joined us. Unheard of! People actually travelling through Paraguay. So we got chatting. Played some cards. They were Jimmy and Kev - an Irish and Englishman, who had just met a few days prior to the boat. Come lunchtime, we realised that the boat still hadn't departed. We were chuffing boiling. Hot hot hot. Come 4pm we were told it was going at 5. Come 5pm they said the next day. We weren't entirely sure why we wern't going. Then the TV crews ... read more

well, I'm not there yet, so it's a bit of hopeful thinking, but I soon will be, if all goes well. It's been a while since I wrote a blog, and there's a good reason why, so I'll try to write one now. I'm just waiting for my bus, to take me away to new lands where I wasn't expecting to go they weren't expecting me, I'm always a stranger surrounded by foriegners cause I'm the foriegner... Last night, I went to the bus terminal in la paz at around nine, thinking to go to Sucre, and from there to paraguay. Turned out all the busses had left at about 6 for sucre, and I'd have to wait for tomorrow. OK where can you take me? I asked. Cochabamba. What is in cochabamba--well, the biggest jesus ... read more

i don´t know who knows what´s been going on in my little latino life recently...but it´s been a rather, erm, colourful two weeks...everyone keeps telling me dengue is the best souvenir you can get from paraguay (its actually probably the only one), and it´s been quite a lot of fun...so here goes, i´ll launch in a describe... well i´d been feeling really tired for a while, and im not much of a sleepy person and was sleeping 10hrs a night plus (early nights, really exciting)..at first i thought it was becuase i´d taken up running every morning and was really going for it through all the potholey streets, dodging the cows and the rabbid dogs who seem to get turned on by a sweaty gringa running around and go for my ankles which is a bit scary. anyway, ... read more
