After a day in Asuncion Ive discovered that the lonely planet researchers probably havent visited here for a couple of years. Almost everything in the "backpackers bible" is out of date!! the first hostels that we went to that are recommended are closed down, the restaurants dont exist and the travel information is all wrong!! Its the first time Lonely planet has failed me but were getting by ok! They did get one thing right though, the breakfast in the hotel were staying in is described as "unremarkable" and they certainly got that right! After the fabulous breakfasts in Brazil (brilliant coffee, fresh fruit juice, ham, cheese, rolls, cornbread and fresh fruit and nobody minds you making up a packed lunch) this breakfast is a little depressing. A teaspoon of yucky jam each (i think it ... read more

I made it, after only a slight palava, safe and sound to Asunction, the capital city of Paraguay. Although I am minus a Brazillian exit stamp for Brazil and an entry stamp for Paraguay, so I am ilegal but Ill cross that border when i come to it, literally! I arrived at the dodgy port on the Paraguan side of the Rio Paraguay an hour before the boat was due only to be told that the boat wasnt coming until 5am!! The tiny town (about 3 houses, one bar and one hostel) was super dodgy and I didnt fancy waiting on the dockside for 6 hours so I invested in a room at the only and very delapitated hostel. there was no baño, bedsheets that hadnt been changed for about 5 years and i could watch ... read more

breakfast in paraguay, lunch in brazil, dinner in argentina.... crossed illegally into paraguay...inadvertantly...yep, that´ll be the antartica again....decided that we needed our passports stamped for memories, so we went to the immigration booth, from the wrong side, after all we were already in....they was not pleased, left, left the country, returned, repeated the trick....in paraguay 3 times yesterday.... when we left for good we did it on the back of a moto taxi...the border crossing is a long two lane bridge, the bridge of friendship, ahhhh, but there was an altercation in the middle, which tuned into a riot, which turned into panic....stuck on the back of a madmans bike, dave somewhere in the crowd behind me, jammed with bikes, cars and fighting people, had to negoitate a scaled down version of monaco grand prix for ... read more

Paraguay - 8 Days (9th - 17th Feb) From Iguazu Falls I travelled through Paraguay to Bolivia, taking 8 days to absorb what I could from this little visited, dirty, poor country. I spent 2 days in Encarnacion, so that I could visit the Jesus and Trinidad Jesuit Ruins, preserved religious missions founded by the Jesuit missioners during the colonization of South America in the 17th century. Then I went to the capital, Asuncion to explore all the colonial architecture (the Palacio López was the most attractive thing) but it was your bog standard, nothing special city, so I enjoyed some corn flakes and waited for an American friend coming from Brazil On the way towards Bolivia we stopped at Filadelfia in the Chaco region, right in the heart of the Mennonite settlements. Mennonite settlers came ... read more
