For those of you attempting to cross the Earth´s greatest short cut by means of the World´s longest highway, you must first unfortunately wait until it is completed. The Darien gap spanning more than 250kms, may be passable by some means of transportation, but none of which we had at hand. Aside from that, we had also been deterred from this path by several ominous stories of FARC gorilla awaiting passing tourists. Abandoning our roadway campaign we searched for a shipping company that would assist us in our long journey to La Patagonia de Argentina. Hamburg Süd shipping was the ideal company for us, as its prices were the lowest and they had a ship that would take our car down to Guayaquil, Ecuador the soonest. We had the option of going up to Cartagena, ... read more

We took advantage of the 1pm check-out in what seemed like an un-interesting city and lay in bed until midday. Upon investigating the cost of humpback whale watching over on the coast in the Machalilla National park, we decided to head straight to Quito a week ahead of our Galapagos trip. Our plans to explore surrounding areas such as Baños were scuppered by the recent eruptions of volcano Tungurahua (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/latin_america/10189054.stm), but Claire and Matt from our Inca Trek were in Quito and we would surely be able to occupy ourselves. Before heading to the bus terminal we went in search of lunch... you guessed it... KFC! Then we stumbled quite accidentally upon not one but two city plazas teeming with iguanas! In the first, we were the only ones taking any interest, but the second was ... read more

Not a lot to report from today, bus was pleasant with good leg room, breakfast and lunch served on board and movies played either in English or with English subtitles for once! It didn't arrive in Guayaquil (Ecuador's largest city) until 6pm though. Exhausted and me with indigestion we went in search of a light and healthy dinner, not wanting to venture too fa as this city isn't the safest after dark (where is!?). Unfortunately for our 5-a-day, the ONLY thing on offer within a mile radius of our hotel was fried chicken and chips (or rice). Literally fast food joint after fast food joint. The healthiest dish I could find was a KFC Twister wrap (not too many carbs, and even a little salad!). Chris had chicken and chips and we returned to the hotel ... read more

It has been more than 7 years since I left Ecuador to go to Germany. I have visited a few times, but this one, after 2 and half years is planned differently. After backpacking in other countries sometimes alone or where I didn’t even speak the language I would like to travel backpacking in Ecuador. I’m not sure how easy or hard it is going to be for two reasons: first, Guayaquil is my city, my hometown, so people I know, family, food I like, places I know and haven’t seen in a long time are here making sometimes difficult to leave the city considering I’m just visiting for a “short” time. Secondly, I believe we (South American people) suffer from some sort of fear or paranoia and are therefore scared of traveling in our ... read more

Just touched down in Guayaquil, Ecuador about to connect to our flight to Lima. Unexpectedly, we were upgraded to first class for our flight from JFK to Ecuador, which, given that our flight took off at 11:55 (really 12:30), was incredibly fortunate. We went from wondering whether or not we would be able to catch any sleep on our international red-eye to being fully reclined with a standard-sized pillow and quilt and sleeping like a baby. I also had 3 pisco sours and a Xanax...that might have helped. Either way, we all got 6 full hours of sleep which is far more than we expected. Our layover is only for about another half an hour and then we'll be off to Lima, Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Stay tuned. Hopefully I'll have some pretty amazing pictures up ... read more

Goodbye Jambeli So today we're moving on from the animal rescue farm in Jambeli... and to be honest we're not sure where we're actually going to be sleeping tonight! It's an exilarating feeling not knowing where the next 10 days will take us. All we know is that we have to be back in Quito on the 29th ready to start our tour on the 30th. But until then we're completely on our own... The lady who works at the farm said she would be travelling back to Guayaquil today so offered us a lift with her - she also invited us to come with her to another animal project in Guayaquil that they are also involved in. So that's where we're heading later. It's strange to think that we're leaving this place - it's ... read more

A night out in Naranjal An eventful night to say the least! The man we work with insisted on taking us out to show us the nearby town of Naranjal so on Saturday we called a taxi, spruced ourselves up (it was the first time I'd worn eyeliner and mascara since we'd left England!) and set out down the bumpy, dusty road towards the bustle of the town. We were dropped at a pizza place (that tried to be authentic by hanging pictures of Italian monuments...despite one actually being the Arc de Triomphe). We all had pizza, we all had drinks and we all had huge icecream sundaes after...and the bill came to $19. I love Ecuador! We then headed to a kareoke bar and had a couple of beers before heading to have a ... read more

Jambeli The nearest place on the map is Guayaquil but we're actually staying in a place called Hacienda Jambeli which is an animal rescue farm near the small town of Naranja. But it's off the beaten track. Jambeli is like being in another world. Chickens, peacocks, geese and the odd cat roam around freely but you are truly reminded that you're in the Amazon by the fact that occasionally a monkey will jump on your back out of the blue. The centre mainly focuses on rescuing animals and attempting to eventually rehabilitate them back into the wild. Although for some of them it will never be possible. Our daily routine consists of waking up and going straight to work to prepare the food for the Macaws which are becoming increasingly endangered and thus Jambeli are trying ... read more

I've been quite bad with keeping on top of my writing so here's a quick overview of what I can remember from our week here at Jambeli. I should be up to date after this so will be more prompt with further blogs :) What good little farm workers we are On Sunday there was no work so we went to the near town, Naranjal to stock up on necessities: Chocolate. We bought crisps, chocolate, biscuits and beer. All set for a relaxed week with a few luxuries. We then went to an ice cream parlour and people-watched for a bit. It was amazing how many faces filled the streets it what originally seemed like a small town. Our morning work before feeding the animals mainly consists of preparing the food for the birds, and ... read more

Weather: Hot & Humid Location: Guayaquil So, off we go again to the airport for our flight to Guayaquil, Ecuador's highest populated city. It seems we've only been in the air for about 20 minutes before we arrive skidding into the airport at our new destination. We have left the drizzle and altitude of Quito and arrived in what already appears to be the jungle! The humidity hits us as soon as we set foot off the plane. And the popular Friends quote soon becomes a part of our everyday language. There are palm trees, banana trees, cocoa trees and oozing, bubbling swamps...and this is only the airport! I have truly never seen anything like it. We are met by a man called Christian, who arrives half an hour late with a flimsy bit of ... read more
