Last day in Ecuador after 9 amazing days exploring the "Avenue of the Volcanoes" Highlights included: Standing on the Equator on March 20, one day before the Equinox - sun was right overhead. The irony of being 50 miles south of the Equator, 15,000 feet above sea-level and throwing snowballs at each other (Cotapaxi). Visiting an indigenous market full of textiles and crafts on Market day (Otavalo). Relaxing in thermal baths heated by a nearby active volcano (aptly named Banos) Eating some of the best (tasty and cheap) food on our whole trip (Posado del Arte hotel in Banos and El Jardin restaurant in Cuenca) Driving through scenery that makes the Lake District look amateur by comparison (Riobambo - Alausi) Riding on the Devil´s Nose train named by the engineers that built it as the most ... read more

So it turned out that the guard who sent us to a bank to deposit $20 to get our visa stamp wasn't on the take... that's part of the process. And since we didn't get it done in Quito, and there isn't an office to get that particular stamp in Cuenca, we had to head down to Guayaquil to get it done before our first 30 days elapsed. Saturday night, we headed over to the apartment of Dameon and Karen Walker, a couple from Cleveland who packed up their two boys, Elijah and Joseph, and decided to give South America a try around the same time we did. We've been hanging out with them quite a bit, Justin and Dameon bonding over a shared love of the NBA and beer, and Chris and Karen bonding over ... read more

Suggestion one. Tranquilizers and sedatives. Lots of them. They might be the only thing that keeps you from turning into a raving anarchist in this process. By the time you drive all the way through Central America, you are going to feel like a battle-tested road warrior who can easily handle whatever the next border can throw at them. Well, as the wise philosophers of Bachman–Turner Overdrive said “You ain't seen nothing yet”. Plan One: Ship our '77 VW Westfalia via RORO (Roll-on, Roll-off car transport ship). RORO has one big advantage which is that it is less than half the price of shipping a car in a container. Because we don't have deep pockets, we were sold. However, here is the thing; shipping companies don't like shipping single cars RORO. It is not a big ... read more

What is the purpose of the gathering of believers on Sunday morning? Wait, no really. What is it? The "seeker sensitive" movement (and the many other churches who are consciously or unconsciously following their lead) would have you believe that the main purpose is to get people in the door so they can hear the "gospel" (which is usually not the gospel but rather the four spiritual laws) so they can be "saved". No. A million times no. We gather on Sunday morning to worship and bring glory to God. One has to be a believer already to do that. Sunday morning is not for the unbeliever but rather the believer. If there are unbelievers in the congregation (and I assume there nearly always are) then good, let them see how we love and adore the ... read more

We spent 2 full days traveling from Puerto Lopez, Ecuador to Lima, Peru. The first leg of the trip was to Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador. It has an awesome bus terminal that is huge, modern, clean, and also functions as a shopping mall. From there we went to the Ecuador border town (Huaca-something) to get checked out of the country. Then we took the same bus across the crazy border to Tumbes. Thank god we booked a bus straight through to Tumbes because it would’ve been hectic and difficult (and, we heard, dangerous) to cross on foot. We heard about taxis that, instead of taking you across the border, take you to a slum and police officers get in the taxi and make you pay them ludicrous amounts of cash in exchange for not ... read more

Kwesi and I are here! After way too many flights and way too many airports, Kwesi and I arrived at our hotel in Guayaquil today. I arrived around 1:30pm and Kwesi around 5:30pm. It took us a long time to get to Ecuador... We don't have much time here. We leave tomorrow morning at 8:45am for the coast. It's going to be very interesting though! This afternoon I walked around a bit and saw some interesting sights. There is a river nearby with a nice walking boulevard. I also saw a crazy park full of Iguanas... Yes, Iguanas... The iguanas went missing after dark so it's my guess that they are pets! I don't have any pictures as Kwesi had the camera. We went out as a group for dinner. It was a beautiful evening. It's ... read more

Panama: Well we left off when we were in Panama still at the Hostel in Casco Viejo. We were sending out emails like crazy and receiving nothing in return. En este mundo hay muchos preguntas y pocas respuestas. (In this world there are many questions but few answers.) We made endless phone calls and chased imaginary captains of boats. In the end, after a lot of stress we finally got a hold of one company, called Hamburg Süd. They were the least expensive and the first to reply to our phone calls and emails. This process was not without its own speed humps but we were able to leave our hostel in Casco Viejo and drive up to Colón to ship our car. (For anyone looking to ship their car from Panamá to South America, check ... read more
