Isabela Island is the biggest island in size, and has the second biggest population. While all the other islands only have one big volcano in the middle, Isabela has five with lava flow in between creating three different types of habitat and species. We only stayed in the first part where the town is but we still got to see plenty of animals. We drove out of town to see some more marine iguanas and then climbed up to an overlook to get a view of the whole area. The Galapagos were first used as dumping grounds for criminals to get them out of the way and keep them busy. There were about 300 on Isabela and they were put to work building a wall out of lava blocks. Eventually there were only 27 left (the ... read more

Since I am on a land tour of the Islands and not a cruise ship, whenever we transfer islands we have to spend part of our day traveling by speed boat. This morning we left bright and early for a 3 and a 1/2 hour boat ride from San Cristobal to Floreana Island. It was a long and very bumpy ride and the only way I survived and didn´t get sea sick was by sleeping. The highlight of the trip woke everyone up though. We passed a huge pod of dolphins that were chasing a school of fish. There weren´t just four or five dolphins like you usually see, but more like hundreds jumping through the waves. Some came and played with the boat and the captain said he hadn´t seen a pod that big for ... read more

Holiday within a holiday... Mick and the Possums tour Isla Isabela Story and photos by Josie Eight days and nights in a hidden part of the world, only a day’s boat ride west from San Cristobal but seemingly a world apart from the paved streets, university pressures and day to day routines. The early morning boat from San Cristobal slips across the blue sea as the sun rises... past rocky Isla Santa Fe, covered in stark cactus trees, arriving at Puerto Ayora in Isla Santa Cruz around 9am. Santa Cruz is the most populated island in the archipelago and is not a place I’d like to spend a great deal of time - busy, artificial and filled with wealthy tourists. We stepped onto another boat after lunch, packed tightly into the overcrowded cabin with surfboards, tents ... read more

So next morning we feasted and jumped on the boat for the 2.5 hour crossing to Floreana. San Cristobal was left behind very quickly, as we headed into the rain. The boat was mighty impressive, holding a good speed through the huge pacific swell, but I swear the waves were coming from 3 different directions; Russell would probably agree as he spent most of the voyage revisiting his breakfast! Meanwhile I saw something that looked like a sheet of cardboard jump out of the water; wet cardboard doesn't tend to do that kind of thing, so I think it was a manta ray... We arrived at a sheltered cove on Floreana and jumped in the water, almost instantly bumping in to a couple of mating turtles, they were never going to get much peace with us ... read more

From Santa Cruz we took a speedboat over to the island Isabela, which is the biggest island in the Galapagos (4 times the size of Santa Cruz). Though it has the largest land area, it has one of the smallest populations. Isabela is famous for it´s volcanoes, however these sites are located far apart and are usually only visited by people with longer itineraries. We were to be only Isabela for only 3 nights, and spent most of that time exploring the small town via the dirt roads. Our hotel was right on the main beach, where we could walk for 5kms in the rolling waves. ... read more

We flew from Sao Paulo to Galapagos with a stop over in Quito, Equador. It had been a long flight, since we had to fly over Lima in Peru. At the airport we took a taxi to the old city. The taxi driver wanted to make a quick buck so he had a meter that metered the distance instead of the peso's. Besides that he drove a very long way around town, so he could get more meters on his meter! But we knew it would cost only $10 instead of $22, so that's is what we paid after a some intimidation back and forth. The old city in Quito is very old and has beautiful buildings and narrow streets. We stayed at a nice hostel, were we could also book a tour to the Galapagos ... read more

Woke up at 7am for breakfast at 730. I opened my eyes to my mom eating the chips ahoy chocolate chip cookies I had been saving for an emergency (most likely for lunch today since the Russians we met last night said the sandwiches were tuna and vegetable...gross). I was like, WHY ARE YOU EATING THE COOKIES I´VE BEEN SAVING!?!?!? "Because I´m hungry and wanted a snack" was her reply...I was not a happy camper because now I was most likely going to go without food for the majority of the day. At breakfast I met a local Ecuadorean and shot the sh*t with him for a bit. After breakfast we met the rest of the group we would be with for the day, a spanish chic and a guy from holland who are doing north ... read more
