So as it turned out, we didn't try any of the things Colombia is famous for but we did have a very relaxing and enjoyable end to our trip. 12 December (day 49) - to Bogota Having eyed up the pancakes at the Magic Bean ever since we got to Quito, today was the first time we got to sample them. It was worth the wait. We grabbed a taxi to the airport and got a nasty shock when we discovered we had to pay $40 each to leave the country. The worst thing is we will have to pay it again when we leave to come back to England. We were both really tired today and are looking forward to lying on a beach. We ate lunch on the flight and after meeting our first ... read more

7 December (day 44) - Journey to the jungle We are definitely not going to be taking up careers at sea any time soon. James still felt dizzy this morning. We got to the airport with loads of time before our 9am flight. We sat waiting for our flight to be called and were slightly confused that our flight number came up on the board but it had Coca as the destination instead of Lago Agrio. We were told there was a connection to Lago Agrio so we boarded the plane. After 30 minutes we landed at Coca and were told we had to transfer. We collected our bags and were pointed towards a bus. We were very confused but got on the bus and after having our boarding passes checked we were on our way. ... read more

Since I last wrote, we have been taking life at a slightly slower pace, well that is until we climbed a 6056m volcano yesterday but more on that later. 20 November (day 27) - Travelling to Mendoza There is something slightly crazy about flying from Bariloche to Mendoza via Buenos Aires (if you look on a map you will see why), but that is what we had to do. We turned up at the airport slightly early as we knew giving back the car could take a while, only to find that our flight was at 12.30pm and not 11.30am - nice of them to tell us. Handing back the car was fairly easy, just quite costly. First the man read the clock wrong and tried to say we had driven 800km further than we had, ... read more

13 November (day 20) continued - El Bolson We liked our first glimpse of the lake district - large mountains dropping down into beautiful clear lakes. On arrival in El Bolson we followed the trusty Lonely Planet's two best sounding accommodation options only to find that they were both shut. Our third choice was fully booked. On our loops around the town (even the smallest towns have grid systems with mainly one way roads so we have got accustomed to driving round in circles), we had spotted the shabby looking Amancay Hotel so decided to investigate. It had a room, albeit with a slight smokey smell and a few bare wires coming out of the wall. The Lonely Planet didn't do that much better on its restaurant write-ups. We chose Las Brasas, allegedly the best place ... read more

9 November (day 16) - El Calafate We slept very well and could have slept for another 12 hours but dragged ourselves up at 8.30am for breakfast. Marcela cooked James some eggs and we watched a bit of very bad Chilean daytime TV before packing up the car and leaving to return to Argentina. The border crossing was no less eventful than on the way through. First at the Argentine border we got our passports stamped and returned to the car only to find that after 10 minutes of waiting they still hadn't opened the gate. It turned out we hadn't got our car document stamped - they could have told us rather than watch us sitting there. The woman at the Chilean border took 30 minutes (no exaggeration) to fill in 5 cells of an ... read more

We intended to send episode number 2 of our blog about a week ago but for reasons that you will discover in episode 3 which will follow very shortly, we have been in the middle of nowhere with no internet or mobile reception for the last few days. 2 November (day 9) - Peninsula Valdes The 5.15am start wasn't too bad, especially as they didn't serve breakfast on the plane (they had forgotten to load it on) so we managed to sleep the whole way. James is actually a closet plane spotter as he loves telling me what kind of plane we are on, how many engines it has etc - this one was apparently a very old McDonnell Douglas 80, all I cared about was that it got us to Trelew. We smuggled some food ... read more

Here is the first entry in our much debated blog. James' view on blogs is similar to anything else to do with technology ie they are rubbish. Having enjoyed reading what my friends have been up to on their travels, I don't agree and think it is only right that we should bore you with what we are up to during our 9 weeks away. I was going to promise to keep it short and sweet, with pictures if we can work the technology (this could be a challenge given the trouble we had installing skype onto our laptop), however, anyone who has ever read anything I have written will know that I don't know the meaning of the word succinct so I suspect you will just look at the pictures. I have also tried to ... read more
