I received a little miffed comment from a Colombian blog reader about the “drug cartels, bandits & kidnappers” description in a previous blog…..so apologies to all Colombians who are in denial about their history, their current state of affairs & their potential future. No offence was intended. There are no terrorists; no one I know in this particular hostel has been robbed on the way to Playa Grande (twice) & kidnappings never happen…….here….ever……honest! Oh Fingerprinting your mail: Following on from how settled this country truly is & coupled with the fact that the weight involved in carrying a kilt, sporran & big heavy Scottish leather belt across Central America (where the reality is I’d never get to wear it - as it’s just too feckin damn hot) & the length of an Amazonian blowdart gun is ... read more

The night life in Taganga is quite good & consists of lots of wee bars & restaurants & a club called El Garage: it’s open & busy Wednesday-Saturday & it’s stinking hot there even though it’s completely out doors. Afterwards everyone usually goes to the beach for the after-party which is cool, in a hot sweaty kind of way, especially when there’s a 24 hour bottle shop round the corner! ... read more

(Ser dokke at eg klarte aa faa alle mine fire spraak inn i overskrifta?) Hei paa dokke!!! No er vi i Santiago, Chile. Vi fekk ein turbulent start paa oppholdet her, daa eg vart tatt for smugling i sikkerthetskontrollen paa flyplassen. Eg tullar ikkje. Cartagena Som vi ... read more

Just north of Cartagena along the coast is the lovely beach town of Santa Marta. Smaller than Cartagena but nicer beaches including the hippy style town of Taganga to the north. Our first night in Santa Marta, was pretty quiet, still pretty humid, we walked around town had a quick dip and bought some food for our following day at the beach. Had a few beers at the hostel which was run by a nice Colombian guy. Had a chat with a few Swedish guys from the hostel. Taganga is a 5min taxi from Santa Marta, and is idyllically set. Unfortunately, it was a major weekend for the locals and the place was packed. so we hiked around the coast to another beach called Playa Grande. Also packed, and finally to a smaller beach cove where ... read more

Warning: This blog is about me doing nothing for a couple of days on the Colombian Carribean. After a pretty tiring 18 hour drive from Bogota, we arrived in Santa Marta to be greeted by heat and humidity. With the temperature in the mid 30s, and humidity pretty high, the dusty city of Santa Marta was a bit of a shock after coming from Bogota, in the mountains, and off the air conditioned bus. At least it wasn´t as bad as a story I heard from a man who had been to Venezuela, who said that he had woken up one morning on the bus to find ice on his glasses - I suppose wasting fuel to cool the bus down when petrol is almost free is no biggy. I had caught the bus with Karina ... read more

After a slow start Darragh, Sharyn and I made it to the bus station and onto a bus that was apparantly going directly to Santa Marta, about 4 hours north of Cartagena. It didn't take long for all of us to get comfortable and enjoy the chance to do nothing for 4 hours on the bus. Only a couple of hours later though we pull into a large town and were told bluntly to get off the bus and change to another smaller one......yes just another instance where they tell gringos whatever they want to hear. Again after a bus ride that took longer than expected we arrived in the bustling town of Santa Marta. Santa Marta is a large industrial port town with not a lot of interest for us so we jumped straight into ... read more

Howdy everyone! I am in Taganga right now, it is a small town outside of Santa Marta at the northern tips of Columbia. I figure I should do a short update, since I haven´t updated for a long time... well, a lot of things have happened, I would love to feed you on every single little one of them, but it would take me days to put it into writing. I promise though that at a later date I will do a detailed update..... as the Internet here is actually rather expensive. My rough itinerary is to head to Ecuador next after Columbia and then start my Amazon river travel to Brazil...then settle down for a bit in Brazil (I am really tired of dragging my 30 kg luggage everywhere I go...especially when I am looking ... read more

Taganga is a drowsy and someimes very noisy fishing town east of Santa Marta, that attracts scuba divers, snorklers and young hippies. Juice carts abound.... semi-circular restaurants vie for your custom and anyone who has something to sell will find you. Fishermen bring in a fresh catch daily. Many old barques lie picturesquely along the beach. Where I ate one day I was remembered the next mainly because I had brought in six other people. Cartagena had been left behind early Sunday morning in the driving rain. It had been raining for 16 hours. The streets were flooded. The friends who had brought me back to my hostel after Pablo's Birthday party were caught by a two foot increase of water in the street. They could not get past in any direction. They waited two hours. ... read more

We managed to find our way to Taganga, a small fishing viallage that is taken over by holidaymakers and tourists. Rather like when we lived in Taupo, you left home during the holiday season because it went crazy. Our transport included a taxi to the bus station, the taxi driver had no idea what our Spanish meant and he finally figured out our hand gestures and the odd word in the dictionary. We then managed to find a bus to Santa Marta, we passed alot of low lying homes with water everywhere - possibly from the down pour we had the night before, I hope no homes were flooded. There were mangrove swamps and mixed jungle farms and some cattle farms. We again got to the right destination and found our next transport, a collectivo to ... read more
