Camilo has been telling me about Mangos since the first day we met I think. That it is absolutely spectacular and I just can't leave Colombia without going to Mangos. Last night finally I made it. We made it, with Alison, my Canadian friend from the Language Center, Camilo and some of his Swedish and Colombian friends. And let me tell you that there is nothing that can be compared or come close to Mangos. It is unique , just as Vincure is absolutely unique in its style and all the other big discos around here...I think I forgot to post an entry about Vinacure, muy mal hecho :((, but I was there only once after Halloween only because a local TV invited me to shoot a interview for a programme here, Whats Up :). ... read more

It is a sad fact that Women's Rights are not respected in Colombia, that Children's Rights are also totally disregarded. I think that being in Eafit most of the time and hanging out in Parque Lleras at weekends doesn't really help me get the entire image of Colombia, to say the least. I don't think I really know what Colombia is about , in terms of real issues and populationwise concerns. We talk about paramilitary and guerrilla, but I honestly think we don't really grasp the immensity of the problems, as we, the foreigners are very far from all these daily issues and concerns. We are safe in the big cities and we feel safe seeing patrols and police in the streets, these storys are just something we hear and talk about, actually unknowingly. The ... read more

Well I am back in South America, Ecuador to be exact (I was in Ecuador, now i am in Medellin, Colombia). The two weeks in the states flew by and can be summed up with two words. 24 and pizza. I ended up watching 3 seasons of the TV program 24 which probably equates to 60 hours of TV and ate I don't know how many pizzas. The highlights, however was visiting with everyone (well those of you that I saw) and the "annual" reunion at the Bally Muck (a bar for you non Waukeganites). I was also blessed to see some "old" Abbott cronies, Tuna and Jeanie take a bow (Suds you and Bob can take a bow too, Terry you fall under the Waukeganites). As always it was good to see that everyone was ... read more

We left Ecuador and flew into Bogotá on 17 November. It is a huge city and is really good for a few days of sightseeing. We went up a big hill on a funicular railway and got spectaular views of the city. We visited Simon Bolivar's house. We visited the gold museum (which is world-renowned) and it was actually really interesting. We also spent a day travelling out to this little town nearby (Zipachirá), where they have a huge salt mine, and have built an entire underground cathedral all carved from salt. It was really interesting (but for those who know it, not as good as the one in Krakow). My first impression of Colombia was that it was a lot more wealthy than I had imagined. It appeared to be the richest country we'd been ... read more

My third trip to Santa Fe was basically pretty much the same as the previous ones from the touristic point of view- travelled 80 km north from Medellin, roughly one hour to get to a land with about 30º C, at only about 50 m above see level. Kind of reminded me of Santa Marta and it wasn't good at all. As much as I love Colombia, I guess SM will always be a trauma for me and it will be difficult to get over it. Nice 5 hours spent there on Sunday afternoon in very nice company- Samuel (Switzerland), Ranko (Holland)- trainees like me with AIESEC, Caro, Camilo ( Sweden)- my classmate in Spanish and a Colombian buddy of theirs. The baroque architecture of the Santa Barbara church and the colonial little houses impress ... read more

I don't exaggerate one bit when I say that my life here is exactly like summer camp. Including my work which I absolutely adore!!Yes, definitely my life in Colombia has been pretty much like summer camp. It's not me saying it, it is my sister pointing that out and me admitting it. Yes, summer camp! What a prefect definition! It perfectly describes my life in Medellin. I work about 6 hours a day, and teaching can be soooo much fun, and as we have here in the language center a wide range of resources, planning classes can be great and an easy task, and classes go smoothly, especially once you get the hang of it, the style and the textbook they use here, anyways, working here is in a word, awesome. There aren't too many meetings, ... read more

AS PART OF AN ASSIGNMENT HERE IN THE LANGUAGE CENTER WE HAD TO WRITE AN ESSAY USING THE SIMILARITIES- DIFFERENCES TECHNIQUE. THIS IS WHAT I CAME UP WITH. AFTER A LOT OF WORK I THOUGHT I COULD VERY WELL GO AHEAD AND POST IT. TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK !! EUROPE AND SOUTH-AMERICA : TWO LANDS, TWO SOULS, ONE INSPIRATION. The beauty of traveling brings, besides the mere joy of the activity itself, the very personal discovery of new cultures, civilizations, lifestyles, from which you can learn so much and which can help you improve yourself as a person, as a human being, become more open-minded and tolerant. What you discover on the way is part of the excitement of the journey and comparing the new places with your own homeland comes naturally. After living and ... read more

Knowing that in Europe, at least Romania it is freezing to death now and I am wearing T-shirts , skirts and flip-flops every single day makes me realize again how lucky I am to be here. And again how much I love it, and again how I don't want to leave this paradise... if someone had told me half a year ago that I would end up madly in love with this land , I would have said from the bottom of my heart F*** Off!! ......que cambio....quiero escribir hoy en español para agradecer a este país y a la gente, para decir que es un pais espectacular, que se va a quedar para siempre en mi corazón y que voy a regrezar muy pronto , porque mi alma le pertenece. Sending a few e-mails thinking to get some people together- mainly the trainees, and we are about 7 here if I am not wrong , and some AIESEC people, oh, well this endeavour not only paid off, but it turned out to be todo un exito :)))....I sent e-mails to just about 10 people that I had in my gmail and hotmail list, asking them to forward the e-mail to other addresses, and although I was a bit disappointed because of the poor replies, when I actually got to Parque Lleras where we were supposed to meet at 8 pm, people started coming and coming and coming...till we simply didn't have enough room to sit ...have I ever mentioned Thaico to you guys? Oh, well, if I haven't yet, I must tell you that if ... read more
