The Mercure Hotel is part of the Accor Hotel group. The same chain that own IBIS. The hotel has 23 floors of which our room was on the 7th. Our room although sparsely decorated would be classed as a mini suite in most parts of the world with a work station and settee together with a kitchenette in the living area and separate bedroom with en suite facilities. All rooms seem to be equipped with a balcony. This hotel is ingeniously designed. Most hotels have a front and back with the front balconies offering a sea view and the back balconies offering a view of the alley below or a brick wall of the adjoining hotel!. The Mercure seems to have been built on its side so that the angle of the balconies front and back ... read more

Despite our only previous experience of Brazil was a 4 hour stopover in Sao Paolo airport on the way to Santiago, Chile, it feels like I already exhausted all the innuendos about Brazilians. Although our visit was a quick 'in and out', puns such as when the plane, as it was coming in to land had a near miss; and me referring to it as a ‘close shave' or ‘Don't forget to grab yer nuts!!' I will try not to strive for such predictable laughs during this trip!! (but I can't promise anything!!) Our latest ‘voyage of discovery' (OK not a real voyage of discovery. Vasco da Gama and Magellan went on voyage of discoveries, quite literally. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't be making this trip and you wouldn't be reading this) Anyhow, I ... read more

Dear all, A day after my first story I got a stomach virus and was in lots of pain for a week. Stayed in the house for 4 days and started feeling better. Decided to leave Paraty and go to Trinidad for a few nights before leaving for the farm. Trinidad is a very small town just a bit more south from Paraty. It has lots of amazing beaches and the town mainly consist of tourists. There is one main street and after two days you recognize people that you have seen on the beaches, in the restaurants and on the street. Its quiet cozy and I was lucky to find a hostel opposite a cafe that had live music. So on my arrival day, I heard live reggae being played from my balcony. It was ... read more

Santos, Brazil: Pele, Coffee & Carnival WOW another 2 days at sea and we sailed into the largest port in South America, Santos, Brazil, just as daylight was coming. This is a very busy port with 85% of the goods arriving and leaving Brazil coming through here. There are 8 miles of ports. One of the reasons for this is the proximity to Sao Paulo, the largest city in Brazil, which is about 45 minutes away, normally. However, it is still Carnival time so with all the extra people, it can take up to 3 hours for the trip. Our Cruise Director has announced many times that it is not prudent to try to go to Sao Paulo in one day and still make the re-boarding time at 4;30. We’ll see if anyone went anyway ;-) ... read more

What a sight coming into Santos at 6.30 this morning, highrise as long as the eye could see! It took an hour and a half to come in the river, there is 50miles of port, the largest port in South America. Walked from the port to the old town about 4kms - very dodgy - seedy areas, unsmiling faces and falling down buildings etc etc probably the most apprehensive we have felt but walked into the old town with 6 others - so felt a little safer with numbers! The grand old buildings of the past are just gorgeous, the coffee museum, just beautiful - and boy was the coffee good too! Coffee and oranges are the largest exports from here, but Brazil is the largest beef exporter in the world. Pele (the soccer player) is ... read more

An overnight bus saw us arrive in Curitiba very early morning for one day. We were feeling pretty tired after two big, long, hot ‘aggressive tourism’ days at Iguaçu and the bus so we took it easy. We heard Curitiba was a university town with many parks throughout but we thought there was the feeling that it was a public holiday and nothing much was happening downtown. We took ourselves on a walk of the city center viewing many colonial buildings, churches and interesting street art before relaxing for a few hours with an English screening of The Hobbit. The following morning we were on a bus again to the biggest city in South America, São Paulo for two days. After escaping from customs officials without too much hassle (Courtney was randomly selected while walking on ... read more

Have you ever been to a city with 22 million inhabitants? No? Me neither. And I can tell you it is a pretty amazing feeling and experience to have been there. Its amazing seize, mixed with the multicultural appearance, the vibe of the city and the people makes this place a pretty awesome destination. But let’s start where I left of with my last updates . So Rio de Janeiro and the day trip to Petropolis were pretty cool to visit and after a 6 hour bus ride to Sao Paulo we arrived safe and well. The amazing thing of the bus trip was that after we entered the city limit of SP we were still travelling about for 2 hours until we reached the bus station. One immediately gets the feeling on just how big ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » Araraquara October 31st 2014

In truth,I have left Araraquara but this story is too good to leave swinging in the breeze. So here is the very abbreviated version of the history of TAM airlines. If anyone is interested in a more complete history then you know what to do - just 'google it'. We were fortunate to visit the beautiful museum of the history of not only TAM but of flight. Every age of aircraft was represented and most were on display. A wonderfully illustrated story with as many authentic photos as possible was given. The entire museum, once an old tractor factory, was modern and spotlessly clean. There were many middle school students there on field trips which was fun for me, a former teacher, to observe. Teen-agers are pretty much the same everywhere. TAM was started in 1961 ... read more
