Now here's a novel proposition - getting from one nation to another, luggage in tow, as a foot passenger, and here's precisely how. The eastern end of Ciudad del Este in Paraguay is precisely where the shops run out and border control exists, whereas the western end of Brazil's Foz Do Iguacu is where the city starts and the border control also exists. What connects the two cities is the so-called 'Friendship Bridge', and crossing this bridge in order to gain an exit and an entry stamp is far easier on foot, and quicker if the slow-moving traffic is anything to go by. Foz do Iguacu has probably been deecribed by guidebooks a-plenty as 'the gateway to Iguacu falls' and commented that 'you are hardly likely to come here for the city itself'. That said, as ... read more

David here... The flight from Santa Cruz to Sao Paulo was over 2 hours, our longest flight for a while (and number 28 of this trip - so far, so many more than we envisaged). The checks at Santa Cruz airport took a long time, including a narco check, where every bag was checked and then random person searches took place as well. Suzanne spotted what was going to happen next but I didn't so was shocked when one of the attendants made a beeline for me and dragged me into a room to be searched. It was only an over the clothes search but being directed to a small room in a foreign land is never a good thing and the nerves do start jangling a little. The flight itself was fine, we had the ... read more

So after a few days of chilling in the rather hot Brazilian sun and going a bit pink in places we were headed onto another bus for São Paulo. This bus journey was probably the scariest we had been on. The bus kept stopping every half an hour with people either rushing on or rushing off the bus. We were held at a military check point for ages in the dark. With the help of google translate we managed to ask a local, what the hell was going on! Turns out the people running on and off the bus were smuggling contraband and the bus company was helping them!! This continued through out the night so unfortunately no sleep for us! Having done some googling I found out São Paulo is the biggest shipping port in ... read more

I was finally able to pull myself from the beautiful beaches of Brazil and head inland to what is the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere with 20 million people - Sao Paulo, Brazil. The six hour bus ride from Paraty was uneventful but arriving at the transport terminal in this giant metropolis was a little overwhelming. Luckily I had a map so I was able to get onto the subway, change trains a few times, and eventually make it to the neighborhood where my hostal was at. I thought to myself "I'm getting pretty good at this". Getting out of the subway and walking the streets to get to the address of the hostal was when the excitement really began. As I was walking on some random street trying to orientate myself I suddenly heard ... read more

Geo: -23.5475, -46.6361On February 15, I left Buenos Aires very early (6 AM) to go via Santiago to Sao Paulo. It was very hard for me to leave BA : in the 10 days I was there I got to know and to love this beautiful sunny city as well as the people in the hostel who had become family. At 3 PM at arrived at São Paulo where it was raining like hell... Great! I took a taxi to my hostel where I arrived very tired from not sleeping the night before and from a long flight. So I spent my first afternoon here at the hostel, reading and sleeping. The next morning, I was very happy to find my friend Clara whom I had met in BA and who would spent a few days in ... read more

And so six months of travelling through Latin America has begun! As predicted in my last blog entry, leaving Barcelona was hard - my three months there has to go down as three as the most fun I have had, and I've managed to attain intermediate level Spanish to boot. The lifestyle was amazing, I made a lot of friends, and I got into a wonderful comfort zone that was difficult to leave. As such, I was determined to enjoy it to the very end and had a typically massive night out (one of many in my last week) the night before I left for Sao Paulo. Exhausted, the TAP Portugal flight I took wasn't great - a ten hour one with just one average meal, an average entertainment system and ridiculously cold air-conditioning; something I ... read more
