Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

I forgot, I made a weekend trip to Sao Paulo. It was because I was homesick and dying to see some Asian people. These are not my pics, thanks to Sonia for them! Sao Paulo is like the NYC of Brazil. Metropolitan and chic. The largest Japanese community outside of Japan is located in the Liberdade district. Along with them are Chinese and Koreans. The second night there, Sonia and I ate at a buffet, and the whole restaurant was filled with Chinese people, my guess, a lot of Taiwanese people, since they were speaking Mandarin. Anyway, it was so bizarre, [View Full Entry]

Here we are in the giagantic city of Sao Paulo, we did some exploring yesterday and had many reccommendation from our host Jean Pascal of where to go, and we got absolutely lost. We eventually managed to find our way back was good. It is a big, confusing, intimidating city, but we are getting ready to set off today and conquer yet another city in another country. We are planning to go to Igaussu falls on thursday night and spend the weekend there, which should be incredible, especially since Jean was telling us they have the worlds largest hydro-electric plant, we [View Full Entry]

Not too long a drive to Bonito, well, not compared to some we've had. We arrived early evening, checked in, and a few of us decided to walk into town, as we were told it was a party place. Hmmmmmmm, there was one bar pumping out music, lights & dry ice. On closer inspection there was no-one there, so we moved on to a restaurant down the road. Very bizarre place Bonito, every restaurant sells all meals for 2 people, if you want it for one, you pay 65% of the price displayed. Bit daft, but we worked it out. Decent [View Full Entry]

A very brief and tired update follows....... better notes in the future... so i am currently in a hotel room in sao paulo, brazil.... i also spent 4 hours in rio de janeiro today (albeit stuck on a plane), already 2 things that i didn't expect or plan.... i woke up on the plane from heathrow and went to the loo and heard the captain say very quickly in portuguese something and then what sounded like 'blah de blah diverted to rio de janeiro' in english.... i asked the stewardess if i had heard right and indeed i had - due [View Full Entry]

Just about made it to Sao Paulo... The hostel forgot to book my taxi, so when it finally arrived i had 20 minutes to get to the bus station, and it normally takes 30! After some crazy speeding by the driver, i made it with 2 mins to spare, but didn't have chance to buy any food or drink, so bit of a duff journey as i was starving! Arrived in Sao Paulo at 7am, and found my hostel, which was pretty cool! I walked miles to the centre, and immediately got lost. My sense of direction is shocking, and Sao [View Full Entry]

Thirty minutes gone in the first half. Brazil are two nil down against USA in the Confederations Cup final. The mood in the bar is edgy. Brazilians are not used to losing finals! It could be a long second half. We were sitting in a bar just off Paulista Avenue, the financial centre of Brazil. Paulista is a lot like Fifth Avenue in New York, but in my opinion Paulista is more impressive. It is our first night in Sao Paulo. We had stepped on board a bus three days previous in La Paz, Bolivia and fell out in Santa Cruz. [View Full Entry]

Upon my recent return from SE Asia for 2 months, I realized that keeping a blog/online notebook would have be great for my family and friends to know what I was experiencing everyday. Moreover, a number of interesting facts and experiences faded away (happens when every day I did something I had not ever done in my life = zero routine). But being on the move every few days and not having internet access for many weeks (time in Burma), staying in contact was tough. Now that I will be in Brazil for 11 weeks, I hope friends and family will [View Full Entry]

TAM Airlines are no Ryanair! They welcome you with a sweet, feed you twice, keep you well hydrated and don't try to persude you to buy a single thing on the plane. It was a novel and pleasant experience to actually get value for our €70 per ticket. We almost didn't make the flight though, but this was mostly my fault. Having arrived at Salvador airport in good time, we presented ourselves at the GOL ticket desk. The guy behind the counter looked at us quizzically and fired off some rapid Portuguese in our direction. We responded with our favourite phrase [View Full Entry]

The bus from Campo Grande was supposed to arrive Sao Paulo at 1pm, 2pm already and we were still stuck in traffic, I got worried as I told Rapha the bus arrival of 1pm, we pulled in to the station at 3:30pm, very embarrased I apologized profusely to Rapha who greeted me with his usual big smile, but first thing he said to me is you're so thin!!
