After the 2 weeks in Florianopolis, a rather sleepy town, it was time to see the famouse places of Rio! I was looking forward to Ipanema, Copacabana, the Christ and many more. But first I stopped at Sao Paulo, as it would have been a 18 hours journey going direct to Rio. Sao Paulo was really just a stop over, it is an industrial city and not much to see. Also it was time to adjust to higher prices again, it seems nearly as expensive as in Switzerland! I just stayed for one night and wasn't too sad to leave the next day as it was pouring down with rain (the following days were even worse, glad I left before the big storm came...). Rio welcomed us with sunshine! We started off with a meeting with ... read more

Continuing our travels in South America, our next stop was Sao Paulo, Brazil. This city has the 5th largest population in the world (Brazil is the 5th largest country). One night spent in this huge metropolis was enough. Our memory of Sao Paulo will be of having the best meal of the trip so far - shrimp, the size of lobster prepared for us table side. The following morning we hired a driver. He was supposed to speak English. No English but a real sweet guy! The plan was to drive from Sao Paulo to Parati so we could view the beautiful tropical landscape. All went well until we reached Parati with expectations that did not materialize. Sunny, beautiful beach, nice hotel - NO! Luckily, Hector, our driver, didn’t abandon us and helped us find a ... read more

Day 3 - Ipanema Beach So, rob burned his feet! ha...! second day in, first on any sort of beach - it had to happen really, didn't it! 2 white british kids in 25 C heat, that's the rules surely... Marco Sparco here on the other hand was a bit wiser however...Only the tops of my feet were slightly scorched, T-Shirt on - i've got anoher 362 days to work on my tan!!! Ipanema beach was beautiful. Waves crashing literally 10 metres from the waters edge - you can't go too far in though, or you'll die basically! but you're barely lookin at the waves because you too busy staring at all the beautiful girls in bikinis! drool drool drool...5 / 6 hours of that carry on would do any man harm!! Eventually draging our asses ... read more

M writing - We found a pretty good hostal quickly - decided to go for ambience over comfort which has proven a good choice even if we are already a little sleep deprived each morning due to the staff treating the place like their personal party-space from 6.30am and throughout the day. Brazilian pop can be really quite bad! Anyway, we are still on the hillside in Santa Teresa - a bohemian, arty kind of area with great vistas over the bay of Rio. It is right next to a Favela, but we think not a particularly poor one as there seem to be buildings rather than shacks - we haven't really seen any to compare it to oddly. We're on the border with Lapa - party-central and pretty edgy. Life here takes place on the ... read more

Rio City Rio is an amazing city with its great diversity from 37 white sand beaches, lush green peaks, skyscrapers and largest slums in the world. It is a city that buzzes day and night, it's energy puslating rhought the city streets and with carnaval around the corner, there was no let up!Our hotel was based in Lapa with its colonial buildings, bars and samba clubs. Lapa apparently had its best days before the 20th century but is now experiencing something of a cultural renaissance with its old buildings being restored and is now the centre of the Bohemian scene. At night, it boasts one of Rio's most vibrant street parties which I witnessed first hand as revellers mingle among the samba clubs. We spent the first day orienting ourselves, finding a laundry to deposit all ... read more

Its Carnival time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (or Carnaval as they say here) And here I am in Rio de Janeiro. You have never experienced a party until you have experienced this I am telling you. Samabdrome I honestly don't think words can describe this event. This was the night I had most been looking forward to and it did not disappoint. Unfortunatly it rained half the night and I felt a bit ill but it was still fantastic. We were sat in stand 13 which was on the left hand side right at the finishing line and we had a great view. Its hard to choose where the best stand is. Of course from our stand you got the full scale of it which you could not get up close but then you miss some of the detail. The ... read more

Day 4 of the Carnaval and the idea is as follows, we get afro wigs, Brazilian flags and make some kind of silly outfits out of them! Cool idea huh...after all everybody in this town is in party mood!! Now obviously the plan doesn´t just involve dressing up like fools and sitting around quietly in our respective hostels, far from it! We are off to a Beer Ball at the Scala nightclub in Leblon! Now basically that means you pay 50 Reais (about 15 of your hard earned British pounds!) and that gets you entry and as much beer as you can drink! We all meet in Sarah and Shauns hostel, the other two Kiwis Hamish and Katie have bought us all Brazilian flags but alas no afros as they were too expensive! With this in ... read more

Weeks 14-16 In readiness for our trip to the Pantanal, we were encouraged to pack day bags full of deet, suncream and clothes to keep off the mozzies although none of us were prepared for the onslaught of mozzie bites and monsoonal rainfall that we encountered. Having driven as far as possible by truck, we all transferred to the back of 4x4 jeeps to be taken by our host to Fazenda Boa Sorte - a working farm in the Pantanal. At least that was the intention but at the first police post, we realised that there was a major problem. Although the company we had booked with ~Greentrack~operated by a guy called Murilo who is head of the guide association was supposedly reputable, it transpired that our operator had been remiss re legal paperwork and had ... read more
